Positive Messages as a Motivator for Seeking Information about Candidates
What, if anything, will motivate people to seek information about candidates during campaigns? Our study tackles this question drawing on data from a survey experiment conducted with a total of 1,421 college student subjects. Study participants were randomly divided into four groups, each of which was asked to read one of four brief statements about the candidacy of either Hillary Clinton or Carly Fiorina written in an either positive or negative…
Determinants of Rural Latino Trust in the Federal Government
Trust in government is essential to democratic practice. This article analyzed the factors shaping trust in the federal government using a survey of 260 Mexican immigrants living in rural Illinois and in-depth interviews with 32 participants. To analyze these data, we drew a distinction between support for the regime (system of government that is relatively stable in a political system) and support for authorities (those who temporarily occupy po…
The Contextual Underpinnings of Voting Patterns for Black Statewide Candidates
African American candidates have usually struggled to win statewide elections, but they often perform relatively well in some localities, while doing badly in others. Drawing on unique time-series cross-section data collected in the State of Illinois, we examine how racial and socioeconomic contexts determine support for Black candidates in statewide elections. We show that African American candidates tend to do better primarily in counties that …
The Impact of Legislative Term Limits on State Debt: Increased Spending, Flat Revenue
This article examines the effect of state legislative term limits on government debt levels. Past research has shown the influence of term limits on spending, but the effect of term limits on state debt is arguably more important in considering their desirability. We explain the relation between term limits and debt using the expected impact of changes in the composition, institutional dynamics, and behavior of state legislatures after term limit…
Ps: Political Science and Politics Reviewers, 2011
In 2011, PS: Political Science and Politics published articles covering a vast range of topics. The journal's commitment to publishing articles on pedagogy and the profession, as well as exemplary topical scholarship on a spectrum of issues, call for an equally broad stable of reviewers. PS cannot publish such diverse work without the outstanding work (and openmindedness) of our peer reviewers. The peer-review process relies on the professionalis…
Simulating 2008: A Mock Presidential Election's Impact on Civic Engagement
Young adults have particularly low levels of civic engagement. Incorporating experiential learning activities as part of the political science curriculum shows promise to reverse this trend. We analyze the impact of a mock presidential election simulation on the civic engagement of college-aged students. Exit surveys of student participants and a one-year follow-up survey confirm that this experiential learning activity had a positive effect on p…

Issue Definition in State Economic Development Policy
This paper examines whether an “issue definition” perspective developed by Baumgartner and Jones (1993) can account for the dynamics of state economic development policy. The analysis centers on a case study of Louisiana, and shows that efforts to redefine tax exemptions as a threat to the environment were only partially successful in leading to policy change. I speculate on the reasons for this failure, concluding with the fact that special cond…

Term Limitation, Responsiveness, & the Public Interest
Advocates contend that adoption of term limits will lead to heightened responsiveness and greater attention to the true public interest. This article examines the "responsiveness" and "public interest" cases for term limits from an historical perspective. The author concludes that term limits are unlikely to achieve the goals of their proponents, in part because the two basic arguments supporting the idea have proven incompatible in the past and …
