Effects of Historical Coercive Control, Historical Violence, and Lawyer Representation on Post-Separation Male Partner Violence Against Mother Litigants Who Participated in Adversarial Family Court Pr…
The primary objective of this study was to test the effects of historical male partner violence and lawyer representation on post-separation male partner violence and coercive control against mother litigants participating in adversarial family court proceedings. Toward this end, staff at two women’s shelters administered a questionnaire to 40 former residents who met the sample selection criteria. Two findings are noteworthy. First, there was a …
Marital Separation and Lethal Male Partner Violence
Findings reported by many researchers indicate that the association between marital separation and intimate partner femicide has achieved the status of a sociological empirical generalization. The primary objective of this article is to contribute toward the cumulative development of a conflict theoretic explanation of separation- associated femicide by creating and testing a deductive conflict resolution theory that explains the empirical genera…
Marital Separation and Lethal Domestic Violence
This book is the first to investigate the effects of participation in separation or divorce proceedings on femicide (murder of a female), femicide-suicide, homicide, and suicide. Because separation is one of the most significant predictors of domestic violence, this book is exclusively devoted to theorizing, researching, and preventing lethal domestic violence or other assaults triggered by marital separation. The authors provide evidence support…
Deviance and Crime
This book sensitizes the reader to the fact that there is substantial disagreement within the academic community, and among policymakers and the general public, over what behaviors, conditions (e.g., physical attributes), and people should be designated as deviant or criminal. Normative conceptions, the societal reaction/labeling approach, and the critical approach are offered as frameworks within which to study these definitions. A comprehensive…
Psychosocial factors and treatment adherence in paediatric HIV/Aids
A social ecological model provides a promising framework for understanding the individual, family, and societal factors contributing to non-adherence to treatment of paediatric HIV. This study explored which factors relevant to this model are associated with caregivers' adherence and child health outcomes. A cross-sectional design was utilized to assess relationships among current individual, familial, extra-familial factors, caregiver adherence,…
Safety, Equity, and Human Agency
The primary objective of this article is to present the merits of the case for the contribution made by divorce mediation to the safety, equity, and human agency concerns of separating women. Research findings indicate that divorce mediation makes a greater contribution toward achieving these outcomes than either lawyer negotiations or court adjudication. The article ends with a segment on what men can do to promote women's safety
Sibling Violence
Rethinking Estrangement, Interventions, and Intimate Femicide
North American research shows that interventions and their type, appropriateness, timing, and patterning may help explain variations in the relationship between estrangement and intimate femicide on one hand and reintegration or conciliation on the other. The main objective of this article is to build on Wilson and Daly's male proprietariness thesis by integrating it with a theory of interventions

Coping, Behavior and Adaptation in Prison Inmates
This book is the report of a collaborative effort. Frank Porporino and I arrived at the starting point for our work together by very different routes. Originally trained as an experimental psychologist, I had become in creasingly restive within the confines of the laboratory, and spent a sab batical year in the equivalent of a clinical internship. I then spent some time as a part-time consultant in a local penitentiary. Most of my time in the ins…

patients. But Yagel's healing activities had a deeper significance. He ministered to a vulnerable and profoundly disturbed Jewish community: the Spanish expulsion was a recent memory, and northern Italy was experiencing growing anti-Semitism. In such a situation, the good physician made sense of the universe. He did so by interpreting illness in a manner totally consistent with Judaic sources and values but at the same time congruent with establi…

Violence in Prisons
In this study an attempt was made to construct and then test a causal model of reported aggressive transgressions in 29 felon and 26 misdemeanant prisons and among 278 felon inmates. We found, first, that of the seven independent variables included in the model, only three-the percentage incarcerated for violent offenses, percentage incarcerated for one year of more, and parole referral date-appear in both felon and misdemeanant cases. Second, on…

The Hobbesian Problem of Order
In this paper an attempt is made to evaluate three answers-normative, coercive and exchange-to the Hobbesian question: how can one establish a society in which force and fraud are not routinely used in satisfying wants? Of the three answers, the normative solution is found to be least acceptable because, unlike the two non-normative explanations, it (1) focuses on the problem of maintaining a system in which the participants have already internal…

Gabriel Harvey's Ciceronianus
The statutes of 1570 for Cambridge University prescribe rhetoric as the study occupying the whole of the undergraduate's first year (Documents relating to the University and Colleges of Cambridge [London, 1852], 1.458-9). It is these freshmen (suauissimi Adolescentes atque bellissimi pueri), youngsters from twelve to sixteen, for the most part, whom Harvey particularly addresses in the Ciceronianus. Older students, and colleagues (ornatissimi vir…
