At the track: Gambling on the science of anthropology
Generalization as a method of science, Ewing suggests, does injustice to the anthropological object/subject. But this judgment itself generalizes, giving short shrift to various alternative forms of generalization (e.g., Weberian ideal types) quite distinct from those of a nomothetic or deterministic sort. Sahlins expressly takes his notion of generalization from Leach (1961). The method is inductive and consists of using "inspired guesswork" to …

The Beast Within
The "most able Cartesian philosopher," Jean Denis (1635-1704), undertook a series of blood transfusions in 1667 and 1668 in Paris for therapeutic purposes, especially to cure madness, using the blood of animals. A range of actors and institutions opposed the controversial experiments, and the high law court of Paris condemned the practice in 1668. This article examines the attitudes toward animals and animal blood on both sides of the transfusion…
The Royal Menageries of Louis XIV and the Civilizing Process Revisited
This article examines the shift in animal spectatorship at the beginning of the reign of Louis XIV (the 1660s) from the violence of wild animal combat at the Vincennes menagerie to the peaceful display of graceful birds in the first pavilion constructed in the Versailles park beginning in 1662. I interpret the pavilion and animal collections using the sparse administrative sources and the richer literary descriptions by Mademoiselle de Scudéry, J…
Cet article suggère que la récente critique deUnnaturally French: Foreign citizens in the Old Regime and afterpar Simona Cerutti…

Forest Rites: The War of the Demoiselles in Nineteenth-Century France
In May 1829, strange reports surfaced from the Ariege department in the French Pyrenees, describing male peasants, bizarrely dressed in women's clothes, gathering in the forests at night to chase away state guards and charcoalmakers. This was the raucous War of the Demoiselles, a protest against the national French Forest Code of 1827, which restricted peasants' rights to use state and private forests. Peter Sahlins unravels the fascinating story…
