  • Luminescence dating of burned clay objects from the Lodoso Site (41NU114), middle Texas Coast

Open Access•C Frederick, Kathleen Rodrigues et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2026

The prehistoric cultural material at the Lodoso Site, a Middle Archaic to Late Prehistoric campsite near Driscoll, Texas, is dominated by irregularly shaped heat-hardened fragments of earth called burned clay objects (BCOs). These artifacts are a common component of coastal plain archaeology in Texas and elsewhere in the state. Many such sites, especially those situated in sandy soils, do not preserve charcoal well, which renders dating the occup…

  • Buckner Ranch, Bee County, Texas (41BE2)

Vance T Holliday, Kenneth Brown et al.•ARTICLE•PaleoAmerica•2025

The Buckner Ranch site (41BE2) excavated 1938–1940 produced Paleoindian and Archaic artifacts from terrace fill. It was largely forgotten in the archaeological literature due to questions of artifact provenience and geologic context. Paleoindian material was recovered from alluvial sands and gravels ~35 cm thick in reverse stratigraphic order. Early Archaic artifacts were higher in the section in palustrine fines. Investigations at the site 2016–…

  • Lacustrine Dynamics and Tlatel-Type Settlements From Middle Formative to Late Aztec in the Eastern Part of Lake Texcoco, Mexico

    Open Access•Carlos E Cordova, Luis Morett-Alatorre et al.•ARTICLE•Ancient Mesoamerica•2022•Referências: 27

In the territories of the former lakes in the Basin of Mexico, a tlatel was an insular settlement associated with the exploitation of lacustrine resources. This study examines the stratigraphy and geomorphological context of three tlateles in the eastern part of the former Lake Texcoco and correlates their phases of development with regional paleoclimatic trends from the seventh century b.c. to the sixteenth century. The results of this research …

  • A Newly Identified Younger Dryas Component in Eagle Cave, Texas

    Open Access•Charles W Koenig, J David Kilby et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•2022•Referências: 18

Recent excavations by the Ancient Southwest Texas Project of Texas State University sampled a previously undocumented Younger Dryas component from Eagle Cave in the Lower Pecos Canyonlands of Texas. This stratified assemblage consists of bison (Bison antiquus) bones in association with lithic artifacts and a hearth. Bayesian modeling yields an age of 12,660-12,480 cal BP, and analyses indicate behaviors associated with the processing of a juvenil…

  • Sitio Chivacabe, An Early Paleoindian Site in Western Highland Guatemala

Jon C Lohse, David Yelacic et al.•CHAPTER•Preceramic Mesoamerica•2021

Paleoindian research in Central America remains a nascent field of study even as significant progress has been made nearby in Mexico and further south in Panama and much of South America. Only a single Paleoindian site, Los Tapiales, has been excavated in Guatemala. This research investigated a previously recorded site that contains Pleistocene megafaunal remains and from which a fluted lanceolate projectile point has been recovered. Although Los…

Open Access•R Carpenter, Stephen Carpenter et al.•ARTICLE•Index of Texas Archaeology Open…•2020

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), conducted National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility testing of the Cornelio Alvarez Sr. site (41SR242) as part of the State Loop (SL) 195 project (Project) (CSJ: 3632-01-001) in Starr County, Texas. Subsequent to the field investigations, SWCA Environmental Consultants (SWCA) conducted artifact analysis, reporting, and curation preparation for the multi-component historic and prehistor…

The site is located along Farm-to-Market Road (FM) 10 approximately 1 mile north of Gary, Texas (Figure 1). Geo-Marine, Inc. In August 2004, archeologists from the Cultural Resources Section of the Planning, Permitting and Licensing Practice of TRC Environmental Corporation’s Austin office conducted National Register eligibility testing and geoarcheological documentation at three previously unrecorded prehistoric sites, 41LM49, 41LM50, and 41LM51, at two separate bridge crossings over Lynch Creek (TxDOT Project CSJ: #0231-15-032; designated East and West) by Farm to Ma…

  • Alluvial Stratigraphy and the Search for Preceramic Open-air Sites in Highland Mesoamerica

    Open Access•Aleksander Borejsza, C Frederick et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Antiquity•2014•Citada por: 7•Referências: 54

The Preceramic archaeological record of highland Mesoamerica is biased toward rockshelter sites. We advocate more fieldwork in streamside settings, where open-air sites are likely to be found for reasons related both to the systemic context of hunter-gatherer lifeways and to the geoarchaeological context of site burial and preservation. Predicting site location requires attention to the peculiar nature and behavior of incised ephemeral streams (b…

  • The chronology and collapse of pre-Aztec raised field (chinampa) agriculture in the northern Basin of Mexico

    Open Access•Christopher T Morehart, C Frederick•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2014•Citada por: 21•Referências: 34

Raised field agriculture in the Basin of Mexico was a highly sustainable farming method that did not depend upon centralised political control. Study of thechinampasystem around the Early and Middle Postclassic city of Xaltocan through a combination of remote sensing, GIS, targeted excavation and AMS dating has revealed an extensive area of raised fields that was abandoned when Xaltocan was conquered by an alliance of powerful neighbours during t…

Michael Quigg, Paul Matchen et al.•ARTICLE•Index of Texas Archaeology Open…•2013•Referências: 44

This archeological data recovery investigation in Roberts County in the northeastern panhandle of Texas was necessitated by the proposed widening of State Highway 70 (CSJ: 0490-04-037) by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), Amarillo District. This proposed highway rehabilitation program will directly impact a roughly 10 meter (m, 30 ft.) wide north-south section of prehistoric site 41RB112, the Long View site. This site consists of tw…

  • Aztec period houses and terraces at Calixtlahuaca

Michael E Smith, Aleksander Borejsza et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2013•Citada por: 10•Referências: 30

Calixtlahuaca, a Middle–Late Postclassic site in the Toluca Valley of central Mexico, was occupied ca. a.d. 1100–1530. Our excavations reveal some of the processes involved in the creation, functions, and decay of a large hilltop urban center. At its height, the majority of the site’s surface (264 ha) was covered with residential-agricultural terraces supported by a complex water management system. House construction techniques included the use o…

  • Swidden Agriculture in Thetierra Fría? Evidence From Sedimentary Records in Tlaxcala

    Open Access•Aleksander Borejsza, C Frederick et al.•ARTICLE•Ancient Mesoamerica•2011•Citada por: 4•Referências: 29

Swidden agriculture in Mesoamerica is commonly associated with the hot and humid lowlands and with small isolated communities. Charcoal-rich sediments discovered in Tlaxcala, however, suggest that it was practiced in the cold highlands in the Formative and Classic periods. The headwaters of the Xilomantla drainage incised a nine-meter deep channel shortly before 200b.c., in response to increased runoff from slopes degraded by agriculture. It was …
