  • Kourion Urban Space Project

Open Access•Laura Swantek, Laura A Swantek et al.•ARTICLE•Buried History The Journal of the…•2024

The 2016 season of the Kourion Urban Space Project (KUSP) focused on the excavation of a structure situated to the southwest of the Earthquake House on the city’s acropolis. Excavation revealed a large building, designated Building 4, that had been damaged suddenly and further decayed over time. Though it is uncertain if Building 4 was a domestic structure, administrative facility or both, it is evident from the construction materials, particular…

Open Access•Lucas Grimsley, T Witton Davies et al.•ARTICLE•Buried History The Journal of the…•2024

The 2018 season of the Kourion Urban Space Project (KUSP) continued the excavation of Building 4, a large structure situated just to the southwest of the Earthquake House on the Kourion promontory. Focusing on tracing the architecture of this building, this season revealed the northwest perimeter wall and identified two internal rooms: the courtyard and Room 35. Building 4 continues to yield high quality and imported artifacts including glass ves…

  • Disruption of marine habitats by artificial light at night from global coastal megacities

Open Access•T J Smyth, Tim Smyth et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2022

Half of globally significant megacities are situated near the coast, exposing urban marine ecosystems to multiple stressors such as waste-water discharge containing a host of organic and inorganic pollutants, air and noise pollution. In addition to these well recognized sources, artificial light at night (ALAN) pollution is inseparable from cities but poorly quantified in marine ecosystems to date. We have developed a time- and wavelength-resolvi…

  • A global atlas of artificial light at night under the sea

Open Access•T J Smyth, Tim Smyth et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2021

The impacts of artificial light at night (ALAN) on marine ecosystems have emerged as a focus for ecological light pollution research in recent years, yet the global prevalence of ALAN in underwater marine ecosystems is unknown. We have derived a global atlas of ALAN throughout the marine water column that will accelerate our understanding of its sources and environmental impacts. At a depth of 1 m, 1.9 million km2 of the world’s coastal seas are …

  • Earthquakes and the Crises of Faith

Open Access•T Witton Davies, Thomas W Davies•ARTICLE•Buried History The Journal of the…•2011

The fourth century AD marked a watershed change for the development of Cyprus cultural identity. Transformed by external factors, the Cyprus that emerged by AD 400 is recognizably the forerunner of modern Cyprus. A series of earthquakes during the course of that century caused both the traditional pagan religions and the newly visible and vibrant Christianity to undergo crises of faith. The Cypriot pagan response is to reject the temple cult and …
