A reassessment of Maurice Samuel (1895–1972), author, translator, polemicist, and Zionist is long overdue. One of the most productive and durable of the group dubbed by historian Carole Kessner as The “Other” New York Jewish Intellectuals, Samuel may be characterized as a public intellectual who was content with making his marks in primarily Jewish contexts and without the anxieties of alienation characteristic of his more celebrated contemporari…

  • Invidious Distinctions

    Alan T Levenson•ARTICLE•The Jewish Quarterly Review•2020

The distinctions between Hebrews and Hellenes, the Bible and Homer, Athens and Jerusalem are malleable, generalized, and often invidious. These dichotomies, rooted in classical antiquity, have been deployed by modern figures from Voltaire in the eighteenth century to Leo Strauss in the twentieth. This essay engages in a close reading of two paragraphs that did much to forward the antinomy of Hebraic and Hellenic: the first, from Heinrich Heine's …

  • Robert C. Holub. Nietzsche’s Jewish Problem

    Open Access•Alan T Levenson, Alan Levenson•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2018

Friedrich Nietzsche spoke and wrote without fear of contradiction or criticism. Although Nietzsche never perceived himself as having a Jewish “problem,” his interpreters, from Nietzsche’s own lifetime until the present, certainly have thought he did. Nazi intellectuals, attracted to many elements of his philosophy, had to reckon with Nietzsche’s contempt for the antisemitic parties of his own era. Prominent figures such as Walter Kaufmann, who wi…

  • In search of Ahad Ha'am's Bible

    Alan T Levenson•ARTICLE•The Journal of Israeli History•2013•References: 4

This article explores the dissonance between the radicalism of Ahad Ha'am's essays such as “Ancestor Worship” (1897) and “Moses” (1904), and his defense of the Masoretic Text as the starting point for teaching the Bible and rejection of source criticism as a pedagogic tool in the Herzliya Gymnasium debate. While Ahad Ha'am consistently deployed the Bible as a tool for promoting national revival, his polemics against Yosef Haim Brenner's attempt t…

    Alan T Levenson, Alan Levenson•ARTICLE•The German Quarterly•1998

Thomas Mann's tetralogy Joseph und seine Briider has been evaluated from many perspectives: as a Bildungsroman,i as an historical novel,2 as a clever manipulation of tradition and myth,3 as an antifascist parable,4 even as an obsessive exercise in homoeroticism.5 But Joseph has been analyzed only episodically as an example of Bible commentary. 6 This fact owes more to the academic division of labor than to the contents of the work, which, while v…
