Fashion is an embodied form of culture. It builds on intimate information about the wearer, concerning e.g.body shape, size, age, weight and style. As fashion is digitalized, intimate body data is shared in online environments, which raises novel concerns about the privacy of fashion consumers. This is especially visible in online shopping, which has revolutionized fashion retail and data collection practices in fashion, particularly as concerns the…
Intimate Infrastructures We Depend upon
This essay takes on Lauren Berlant’s mapping of intimacy as ‘connections that impact on people, and on which they depend for living’ in order to address attachments, dependencies, and vulnerabilities in datafied contexts where digital platforms operate as infrastructures of everyday life. La mode à l’épreuve du genre
S’il est une approche critique qui traverse les histoires et les théories de la mode, c’est bien celle portée par les études de genre. Les différentes manières de se vêtir, les proce…
The fashion scandal
During the latter part of the 2010s, many fashion brands – e.g., Gucci, Burberry, Dolce & Gabbana, Prada, Dior – have been caught up with scandals and called out for racism, cultural appropriation and other types of insensitivity towards vulnerable groups. This article will unpack, through critical analysis of some of these examples, the changing landscape of the ‘fashion scandal’ in the late-2010s. We understand fashion scandals as the fuel of f…

How to do humans with fashion
Since the publication of Li Edelkoort’s Anti Fashion Manifesto (2015), fashion scholars are increasingly asking what will become of fashion in the third millennium. Has fashion ended, like Edelkoort claims, or, should we understand fashion differently? The article sees Edelkoort’s manifesto as representative of a moment when fashion scholarship entered a self-critical stage that aimed to redefine fashion beyond consumerism. Recent critiques of fa…
‘I am Lenni’
On 31 May 2015, a self-identified mother, Mari Niinikoski published an open post on Facebook. It was about her son, Lenni, and how adults constantly ridiculed him in various social situations for cross-dressing and for his interest in girly stuff and the colour pink. This article asks why it is a problem that a little boy likes pink and wants to wear a dress? Why is liking ‘girly stuff’ considered detrimental for boys? What is at stake – especial…
