  • Exemplary narratives about the peer-review process

    Michelle T Violanti•ARTICLE•Review of Communication•2026

Until the recent advent of open-review processes, anonymous or double-blind review has dominated decisions about what scientific knowledge in communication is published, and where. This study reports on narratives shared by 16 authors and peer reviewers about their experiences when the process did not go as expected. Three types of exemplars (the world of GenAI vs. humans, misconduct, and looking in on the process) grew out of the qualitative the…

  • Student-to-student communication: Examining and extending our conceptualization and measurement of instructional dissent

    Ryan Goke, Michelle T Violanti•ARTICLE•Review of Communication•2025

Instructional dissent has been studied for over a decade. Expressive dissent, a subset of instructional dissent, focuses specifically on when students are complaining to one or more other students. This article lays out instructional dissent’s origins in organizational psychology and organizational communication. From there, the article homes in specifically on the predictors and correlates of expressive dissent, which focuses attention on studen…

  • Another look at student dissent as outcomes of instructor behaviors

Stephanie Kelly, Michelle T Violanti et al.•ARTICLE•Communication Quarterly•2025

The purpose of this study was to better understand instructional dissent behaviors (vengeful, expressive, and rhetorical) as influenced by instructors’ immediacy behaviors and clarity. Given that instructional dissent is a symptom of perceived injustice in the classroom, it was anticipated that information flow, a student’s awareness of the rationale behind an instructor’s pedagogical decisions, would play a key role in dissent. While information…

  • Faculty verbal messages: Scale development and initial validation

    Open Access•Michelle T Violanti, Michelle Epstein Garland•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Education•2024

Introduction This study set out to create a scale of messages faculty use when communicating with students and provide initial validation evidence for that scale. Methods Three studies were used to create and initially validate the scale. Study one used focus groups to have students generate a list of 65 messages. Study 2, a survey with exploratory factor analysis, yielded two factors: affirming (items) and disconfirming (items) messages. Study 3…

  • Instructor misbehaviors as predictors of students’ writing apprehension

Stephanie Kelly, Michelle T Violanti et al.•ARTICLE•Communication Quarterly•2022

The purpose of this study was to identify how instructor misbehaviors influence students’ writing apprehension. Research prior to this study determined that students’ writing performance is hindered by their writing apprehension (e.g., Zabihi, 2018 Zabihi, R. (2018). The role of cognitive and affective factors in measures of L2 writing. Written Communication, 35(1), 32–57. doi:10.1177/0741088317735836[Crossref], [Web of Science ®] , [Google Schol…

  • Rock My World: Rewind to a Better Transition to Remote Learning

    Open Access•Michelle Epstein Garland, Michelle T Violanti•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Communication•2021

Students and faculty alike found themselves in tumultuous times as they made the transition from face-to-face to remote learning. As faculty and administrators worked hard to overcommunicate with students in the hopes of keeping them engaged and focused on their academic pursuits, students found their attentions split among school, the Covid-19 health pandemic, and paying bills as many lost their employment. In some cases, the overcommunication l…

  • A seat at the table: Addressing validity from critical perspective

    Michelle T Violanti•ARTICLE•Annals of the International…•2020•References: 13

This essay argues that those who create and consume research from a critical perspective should be concerned with issues of validity. An analysis of National and International Communication association journals publishing critical work found extremely limited attention to validity. Critical validity looks different than construct and measurement validity in a post-positivistic perspective. Specifically, a critical perspective needs to address con…
