Self-compassion is a psychological resource that may help people cope with prediabetes and increase their physical activity. The MOVE IT program is an 8-week videoconferencing intervention that…

The purpose of this research was to investigate a range of individual attributes (i.e. narcissism, self-efficacy, body attitudes and internalization of beauty ideals) as antecedents to young college women’s engagement in both general (non-risky) and risky appearance management behaviours. This study also examined the mediating role of beliefs about the importance of appearance in the relationship between all antecedent variables and engagement in…
Service providers’ perceptions of barriers to the implementation of trauma-focused substance use services for women in Cape Town, South Africa
Post-partum celebrity images
Within previous decades, opinions about pregnancy and post-partum behaviour featured in various news articles and within popular literature emphasized issues related to pregnancy and liquor; campaigns against teen pregnancy; pregnancy and weight gain; and pregnancy and dieting behaviour. Attention has shifted from these issues to appearance-related topics including rapid weight loss, exercise regiments and food restriction. For example, photograp…
Port of Spain
When you think of a city, it's usually physical structures that come to mind: the New York skyline and Central Park, the boulevards and Eiffel Tower of Paris, Rio's Christ the Redeemer or even its favelas. So too Stephen Stuempfle's hefty Port of Spain; The Construction of a Caribbean City, 1888-1962 tells the history of Trinidad and Tobago's capital, through its buildings and neighborhoods, as they are shaped by the push and pull of political, ec…
Dress, body and experiences of victimization
Our research purpose was to uncover perceived relationships between aspects of appearance (i.e., body, dress) and experiences of any form of victimization from the perspective of survivors. We addressed three research questions: (1) what connection, if any, did survivors draw between their appearance and their experience of victimization?; (2) what changes, if any, did survivors make to their appearance after their experience(s)?; and (3) what ad…
Fashion brands and gay/lesbian-inclusive advertising in the USA
Within the United States general attitudes towards gays and lesbians (GL) are rapidly undergoing change. Several researchers have previously documented that heterosexual consumers respond negatively to advertisements featuring same-sex couples. At this critical juncture, it is important to reexamine consumer response to fashion advertisements featuring GL images. Using a small qualitative study (n = 10) and an experiment (n = 202) our research pu…

Trial by media
The coverage of the Oscar Pistorius bail application proceedings is examined using the notions of ‘trial by media’ and ‘the media spectacle’. The research substantiated the hypothesis that Pistorius was subjected to a trial by the media, in which he was convicted in the court of public opinion. Furthermore, the coverage of the legal proceedings by t…
Building an Exploratory Model for Part‐time Sales Associates’ Turnover Intentions
This study focused on the development of a conceptual model of the turnover intention of part‐time sales associates in apparel retailing. A convenience sample of 294 college students who were part‐time sales associates was used to test the model. Capacity-Building Assistance and Structural Challenges in Hiv Prevention Services
Friedman et al. produced a thoughtful essay that presented theoretical and practical considerations of underlying reasons for social and behavioral actions of African Americans. Their work revealed a higher order of social structures that can impact HIV transmission. These higher-order structures included themes of survival, struggle, and propriety found in African American communities.1 While we applaud them in their analyses of myriad higher-or…
