Fellah and Townsman in the Middle East
This volume deals with the history of the "common people" in the Middle East, both villagers and urban dwellers. It investigates some of the characteristic traits of the structure and development of urban and rural society in pre-modern and modern Middle Eastern history.
The Waqf as a Prop for the Social System (Sixteenth — Twentieth Centuries)
In this essay I argue that an important function of the Muslim waqf in the Near and Middle Eastern social system between the sixteenth and twentieth centuries was to support and reinforce social units or groups based on kinship or quasi-kinship (such as relations between master and freed slave), or on criteria of social class, profession, territory, religion, linguistic-ethnic identity, and ethnic or national identification

Monopolies and Restrictive Practices of Turkish Guilds
Professional organizations of the urban population headed by a headman and officers chosen from among their members emerged in Turkey at the end of the fifteenth or the beginning of the sixteenth century. During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries they were moulded into an all-embracing system which served as an administrative link between the government and the urban population, and fulfilled various economic and social functions'). A basic…
The Administrative, Economic and Social Functions of Turkish Guilds
A discussion of Turkish guild history becomes meaningless if it does not take as its point of departure that a guild is a professional organization. This means that a guild is neither an organization which is grouped according to professional criteria, nor just another name for groups of artisans or merchants about whose organization nothing definite is known. One may be justified in speaking about the existence of guilds if within a certain area…

The beginnings of municipal government in Egypt
It has been often pointed out that, in contrast with the classical Greek city, the Islamic city never developed into an autonomous league of citizens or attained corporate status or rights. It was not independently administered by its inhabitants but by the central government, which created the administrative apparatus of the city and appointed all its important functionaries. Juridically it did not differ from its rural surroundings and it was n…

Slavery in Nineteenth Century Egypt
In nineteenth-century Egypt Circassian females were mostly kept in the harems of wealthy Turks, the concubines of ‘middle class’ Egyptians generally were Abyssinians, while male and female Negro slaves were used for domestic service by almost all layers of Egyptian society. In addition to domestic service, black slaves were used as soldiers by Egypt's rulers and, contrary to the prevalent assumption, as agricultural workers on the farms of the Mu…

Tanzimat in Egypt-the penal code
In the new activity of qānūn-making at the beginning of the nineteenth century, Egypt preceded Turkey, especially with regard to criminal law. Although Egypt was still part of the Ottoman Empire, Muḥammad 'Alī framed new laws based on Egyptian conditions and valid in Egypt only, while the Ottoman laws of the Tanzimat did not come into force in Egypt before Sa'īd's days. The purpose of this paper is to trace the development of Egyptian penal laws …
