  • Émergence, norme et variation dans les langues des signes

Christian Cuxac, Elena Antinoro Pizzuto•ARTICLE•Langage et société•2010•Cited by: 3

La reconnaissance actuelle des langues des signes (LS) comme langues à part entière, certes indiscutable, s’est effectuée à partir de l’affirmation ‘assimilatrice’ qu’elles partageaient toutes les caractéristiques structurales des langues vocales. Cet article montre qu’il s’agit plus souvent d’une condition posée a priori que d’un constat venant clore un ensemble de recherches, et qu’il faut avant tout clarifier des questions nodales pour une des…

  • Is pointing “just” pointing

Elena Antinoro Pizzuto, Micaela Capobianco•ARTICLE•Gesture•2008•Cited by: 2

This paper examines the nature and properties of gestural and vocal deixis in verbal languages (VL) and signed languages (SL). We focus on two classes of pointing gestures which we argue need to be distinguished: (1) prototypical ostensive printings directing an interlocutor’s visual attention towards extralinguistic objects; (2) pointings to self and to one’s own addressee expressing person reference distinctions similar to those expressed by sp…

  • The link (and differences) between deixis and symbols in children’s early gestural-vocal system

Elena Antinoro Pizzuto, Micaela Capobianco•ARTICLE•Gesture•2005•Cited by: 4

This study aims to contribute to a clearer understanding of children’s developing gesture-speech system examining the interrelation between deictic and representational elements of gestural and vocal types. We analyze the spontaneous productions of six children, observed longitudinally from 12 to 24 months during the transition from one- to two- and multielement vocal utterances. We focus on children’s gestural and vocal repertoires, and one- and…

  • Gestures and words during the transition to two-word speech

Open Access•Olga Capirci, Jana M Iverson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Language•1996

This study explores the communicative use of the gestural and vocal modalities by normally developing Italian children during the transition from one- to two-word speech. We analysed the spontaneous production of 12 children at 1;4 and at 1;8, focusing on the use of two-element combinations of words and/or gestures. Results indicated that use of gesture and gesture-word combinations during the transition to two-word speech is a robust feature of …

  • The acquisition of Italian morphology

Open Access•Elena Pizzuto, Elena Antinoro Pizzuto et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Language•1993

In Pizzuto & Caselli (1992, hereafter: P&C) we provided an overview of morphological development in Italian, focusing on three aspects of free speech production (verbs, pronouns and articles), in the longitudinal records of three children. We analysed our data using criteria appropriate to allow reliable cross-linguistic comparisons with data from English. By this means we evaluated the plausibility of a nativist, parameter-setting account of lan…

  • The acquisition of Italian morphology

Open Access•Elena Pizzuto, Elena Antinoro Pizzuto et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Language•1992

This study explores the spontaneous acquisition of Italian inflectional morphology by three children (age range 1;4–3;0). Longitudinal, free speech samples are examined, focusing on the development of the morphological paradigms of Italian verbs, pronouns and articles. Data analysis is conducted using criteria appropriate to allow reliable cross-linguistic comparisons with data from English. By this means we evaluate the plausibility of a nativis…
