Ethiopian Church Art
Ethiopian painting can be traced back to the turn of the thirteenth century, when the finest mural paintings ever produced in Ethiopia were applied in the standing church of Yemrehanna Krestos and the rock-hewn monolith of Beta Maryam in Lalibela (Lasta region). For centuries, paint was applied to a chalk or gypsum base, but possibly as early as the sixteenth century, artists began painting on sized cotton fabric which was then glued to the wall.…
Automated Transcription of Gə'əz Manuscripts Using Deep Learning
This paper describes a collaborative project designed to meet the needs of communities interested in Gə'əz language texts – and other under-resourced manuscript traditions – by developing an easy-to-use open-source tool that converts images of manuscript pages into a transcription using optical character recognition (OCR). Interpreting medieval mobility from burials at the rock‐hewn church of St. Georges, Gurat (France)
The cave church St. Georges is a hand‐carved limestone cave church located in Gurat, southwestern France, which likely developed from a hermitic site by the High Middle Ages (1001–1300 AD). Gurat is unique in that few bioarchaeological studies of monastic collections, particularly in France, have been conducted. This research represents the first effort to understand who the people at Gurat were, and where they might have travelled from, by emplo…
Churches Built in the Caves of Lasta (Wällo Province, Ethiopia)
The five churches of Yǝmrǝḥannä Krǝstos, Ǝmäkina Mädḫane ʿAläm, Ǝmäkina Lǝdätä Maryam, Walye Iyäsus and Žämmädu Maryam are all built in caves in the massif of Abunä Yosef, situated in the Lasta region of Wollo. Changes in their architectural forms suggest that they were constructed over a period of several hundred years in the order listed and as such represent a significant chronological model against which many of Ethiopia’s rock-hewn churches …
