  • Data-Driven Decision Making in the Prevention of Substance-Related Harm

    Open Access•Robert G Orwin, Jessica M Edwards et al.•ARTICLE•Contemporary Drug Problems•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 19

The Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grant Program (SPF SIG) is a national public-health initiative in the United States to prevent and reduce substance-related harm. The model promotes data-driven decision making (DDDM), with an emphasis on using epidemiological data to help select prevention priorities and to allocate prevention resources. This article examines how well the first two cohorts of SPF SIG states (N = 26) implemented …

  • Effects of the National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign on Youths

Richard Hornik, Robert Hornik et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2008•Cited by: 7•References: 19

Objectives. We examined the cognitive and behavioral effects of the National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign on youths aged 12.5 to 18 years and report core evaluation results. Methods. From September 1999 to June 2004, 3 nationally representative cohorts of US youths aged 9 to 18 years were surveyed at home 4 times. Sample size ranged from 8117 in the first to 5126 in the fourth round (65% first-round response rate, with 86%–93% of still eligible…

  • Welfare Reform and Addiction

    Open Access•Robert G Orwin, Bernadette Campbell et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Evaluation•2004•Cited by: 2•References: 3

The passage of the Contract with America Advancement Act terminated the Social Security Administration’s Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income benefits for persons diagnosed with drug or alcohol addiction (also known as DA&A recipients), effective January 1, 1997. From an evaluation standpoint, the law created the opportunity for a “natural” experiment, specifically, an interrupted time series quasi-experiment. Through the availab…

  • A Fail-Safe N for Effect Size in Meta-Analysis

    Robert G Orwin•ARTICLE•Journal of Educational Statistics•1983

Rosenthan's (1979) concept of fail-safe N has thus far been applied to probability levels exclusively. This note introduces a fail-safe TV for effect size. Rosenthal's (1979) fail-safe N was an ingenious response to the so-called file drawer problem in research integration, in that it provided a direct assessment of the threat posed by sampling bias in the literature search. The algorithm was derived from the Stouffer method (Mosteller & Bush, 19…

  • RRT Meets RDD

    Robert G Orwin, Robert F Boruch•ARTICLE•Public Opinion Quarterly•1982•Cited by: 5•References: 4

Despite its growing role in survey research, the telephone survey has been largely neglected with respect to the design and testing of statistical procedures for assuring response privacy (e.g., randomized response techniques). This paper demonstrates that such procedures are no less feasible to administer in telephone surveys than in face-to-face surveys. Both randomized response techniques and alternatives to randomized response are considered
