The state of educational intervention research as viewed through the lens of literacy intervention
The characteristics of educational intervention research are reviewed: Educational intervention research is inspired by diverse theories, targeted at a variety of simple to very complex interventions, and includes a variety of methods and measurements. Some interventions have been studied much more than others, with the more studied ones often summarized in meta-analyses and other integrative reviews. The study of some of the more complex interve…
How to Publish in Scholarly Journals
This article is based on an invited talk entitled “Getting Published While in Grad School,” which was presented for the Graduate Student Council of the American Educational Research Association at the association’s 2005 annual meeting. The authors discuss issues to consider when one is planning and writing a scholarly manuscript, and they offer several suggestions about substance, organization, and style. They also describe the journal submission…
The Effect of a Literature‐Based Program Integrated Into Literacy and Science Instruction With Children From Diverse Backgrounds
S The purpose of the study was to determine the impact of a literature‐based program integrated into literacy and science instruction on achievement, use of literature, and attitudes toward the literacy and science program. Six third‐grade classes with children from diverse backgrounds ( N = 128) were assigned to one control and two experimental groups (literature/science program and literature‐only program). Both standardized and informal writte…

Training Cognitive Strategy-Monitoring in Children
Second-grade children were given general training in monitoring the utility of strategies, the affective consequences of strategy use, or no strategy-monitoring training. They then performed an associative learning task, first without strategy instructions and then with instructions to use either an effective or ineffective strategy. All training conditions produced short-term maintenance of the effective strategy, but only the strategy-utility t…
Behavioral development and construct validity
Many important variables in behavioral development are presumed to be unrelated because of repeated failures to obtain substantial correlations. In this article, we explore the possibility that such null findings have often been due to failures to aggregate. The principle of aggregation states that the sum of a set of multiple measurements is a more stable and representative estimator than any single measurement. This greater representation occur…
Mnemonic Versus Nonmnemonic Vocabulary-learning Strategies for Children
Fourth-grade students learned a list of relatively complex English vocabulary words in two experiments. In Experiment 1, pupils used either a mnemonic (“keyword”) contextual or a verbal contextual procedure. In Experiment 2, three other conditions were compared to the keyword context condition. They included a no-strategy control condition and two other contextual variations: (a) an experiential context condition that had been used previously, an…
How Does the Keyword Method Affect Vocabulary Comprehension and Usage
THE KEYWORD METHOD of vocabulary learning involves forming a linkage between a to-be-learned vocabulary word and a familiar English word that sounds like part of the to-be-learned item (the keyword). Then the learner forms an interactive image between the keyword and definition referents. In previous research, the keyword method has been found to facilitate students' recall of definitions, given vocabulary items. In this study, use of the method …
