Developmental Causal Structures of Organism-Environment Interactions
The investigation of organism-environment interaction in a developmental framework has been hampered by a lack of adequate analytical methods. Since the application of multivariate, structural analyses has been quite promising for the study of behavioral systems, an extension of this approach to the description and explication of organism-environment interactions on a macroscopic level may be considered as an appropriate next step. Based on chara…

Experimental Sequential Strategies for the Exploration of Ontogenetic and Socio-Historical Changes
This paper presents an extension of conventional Age X Treatment Interaction, pretest-posttest, and time series designs within the framework of developmental sequences according to Baltes and Schaie. The use of the resulting experimental sequential strategies is based on the assumption that the explication of developmental phenomena is advanced by the systematic exploration of variables whose manipulation leads to the modification and simulation …
Looking Inside the Black Box of “Attendance at Services”
Research in religion and health has spurred new interest in measuring religiousness. Measurement efforts have focused on subjective facets of religiousness such as spirituality and beliefs, and less attention has been paid to congregate aspects, beyond the single item measuring attendance at services. We evaluate some new measures for religious experiences occurring during congregational worship services. Respondents (N=576) were religiously-dive…
Course of Depressive Symptoms in Patients Undergoing Heart Surgery
Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the dimensionality, stability, and course of depressive symptoms over the 12-month period beginning approximately 1 week before heart surgery. Methods: The Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) was administered to 570 patients before heart surgery and 1, 3.5, 6.5, and 12.5 months later. Results: Confirmatory factor analysis rejected a four-factor model as a result of small …
Alcohol and Sexual HIV Risk Behavior Among Problem Drinking Men Who Have Sex With Men
Spatial dynamics of alcohol availability, neighborhood structure and violent crime.
OBJECTIVE: This study examined the relationship between neighborhood social structure, alcohol outlet densities and violent crime in Camden, New Jersey. METHOD: Data pertaining to neighborhood social structure, violent crime and alcohol density were collected for 98 block groups, and analyzed using bivariate, multivariate and spatial analyses. RESULTS: Each type of analysis showed that those areas with high alcohol outlet densities experienced mo…
Response Reliability and the Study of Adolescent Substance Use Progression
Studies of adolescent substance use progression typically infer a sequence of initiation from self-reported ages at first use of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and hard drugs. This paper examines the reliability of this procedure for a sample of 892 New Jersey youths interviewed on two occasions separated by three years. Individual responses on the second occasion differed substantially from those provided on the first. However, the inferred sequen…
Risk of assaultive violence and alcohol availability in New Jersey
OBJECTIVES: This study examined the relationship between rate of assaultive violence and density of alcohol outlets in New Jersey. METHODS: Data pertaining to assaultive violence, alcohol outlet density, and sociodemographic factors were obtained from municipalities in New Jersey (n = 223) and assessed through bivariate and multivariate analyses. RESULTS: Sociodemographic factors accounted for 70% (R(2)=.70) of the variance in the rate of assault…

Testing for Equivalence of Measurement Scales
Most quantitative comparisons of interest are based on scores obtained from multi-item scales. In order for such comparisons to be valid and meaningful, conventional thinking dictates that simple structure and metric invariance must be satisfied at the level of individual items. However, it is proposed here that the use of multi-item scales requires only that conditions of simple structure and metric invariance be satisfied at the scale level, th…
Towards the assessment of adolescent problem drinking.
Longitudinal data were obtained from a nonclinical sample of 1,308 male and female adolescents covering the age range from 12 to 21. Factor analyses of 52 symptoms and/or consequences of alcohol use yielded three problem dimensions. In addition, a unidimensional, 23-item scale (the Rutgers Alcohol Problem Index, RAPI) was constructed with an internal consistency of .92. Correlations between RAPI and alcohol-use intensity were moderately strong fo…

The Study Of Multivariate Change Structures
Joreskog's LISREL model is applied to the case of longitudinal data. However, instead of postulating causal relationships between individual differences obtained at successive points in time, the developmental model proposed here, assumes causal relationships between initial individual differences and individual differences in subsequent intraindividual changes over a specified time interval. More specifically, causal relationships are postulated…
