The predictive validity of vocational interests for life outcomes across adulthood
(e.g., civic engagement, cultural participation) outcomes assessed 11 years later. Across adulthood (ages 25-67 at interest assessment), interests significantly contributed to all 12 outcomes, demonstrating that interests are predictive of life outcomes after adolescence and young adulthood. Age-moderation analyses using local structural equation modeling and age-group-specific analyses indicated that many interest-outcome links remained stable t…
Exploring the dynamics of volitional personality change: A psychoeducational intervention study with young adults transitioning to the workforce
Interests of the future: An integrative review and research agenda for an automated world of work
Diversity in the career lifecycle: A review and research agenda
Interested and employed? A national study of gender differences in basic interests and employment
Job characteristics and personality change in young adulthood: A 12‐year longitudinal study and replication
OBJECTIVE: Personality changes are related to successfully performing adult occupational roles which require teamwork, duty, and managing stress. However, it is unclear how personality development relates to specific job characteristics that vary across occupations. METHOD: We investigated whether 151 objective job characteristics, derived from the Occupational Information Network (O*NET), were associated with personality levels and changes in a …
Short‐term personality development and early career success: Two longitudinal studies during the post‐graduation transition
OBJECTIVE: Investigate short-term personality development during the post-graduation transition. BACKGROUND: Prior research indicates that long-term personality development matters for employment outcomes. However, this evidence is primarily limited to multi-year longitudinal studies. This research switches the focus to personality changes during a shorter, impactful life transition. METHOD: We examined how short-term personality development duri…
Life goal development, educational attainment, and occupational outcomes: A 12-year, multisample longitudinal study
Life goals play a major role in shaping people's lives and careers. Although life goals have prior documented associations with occupational and other life outcomes, no prior studies have investigated associations between life goal development and occupational outcomes. Using two representative samples of Icelandic youth (Sample 1: n = 485, Sample 2: n = 1,339), followed across 12 years from adolescence to young adulthood, we examined life goal d…
Can everyone get interesting jobs? Estimating interest fit across gender, ethnicity, and education
Although research and policy efforts have attempted to “even the hiring playing field” and progress equal opportunities, systemic employment patterns based on gender and ethnicity remain prevalent. An unexplored avenue of diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts is the degree to which all people can obtain jobs that fit their interests. The present study used a large, diverse sample of over 250,000 American employees to estimate the average vocat…
Mindfulness and workplace safety: An integrative review
Mindfulness has recently gained popularity in applied settings to enhance workplace safety, especially in safety‐critical occupations such as healthcare and construction. In this review, we synthesize existing research across disciplines to establish a theoretical model of mindfulness and safety. Based on 32 empirical studies, we first summarize and critically analyze how mindfulness and safety are conceptualized and operationalized in the litera…
Adolescent vocational interests predict early career success: Two 12‐year longitudinal studies
Vocational interests are relatively stable individual differences that can change across the lifespan. However, little is known about the importance of interest changes, relative to stable interest levels, for predicting career outcomes. This study assessed the long‐term predictive power of adolescent interest levels and interest growth for five career outcomes: degree attainment, occupational prestige, income, and career‐ and job‐satisfaction. T…
Great expectations: Adolescents' intentional self-regulation predicts career aspiration and expectation consistency
Interest fit and job satisfaction: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Developmental structure of personality and interests: A four-wave, 8-year longitudinal study
Personality traits and vocational interests capture different aspects of human individuality that intersect in certain ways. In this longitudinal study, we examined developmental relations between the Big 5 traits and RIASEC vocational interests over 4 timepoints from late adolescence to young adulthood (age 16-24) in a sample of Icelandic youth (N = 485) well-representative of the total student population. Results showed that interests and perso…
Normative changes in interests from adolescence to adulthood: A meta-analysis of longitudinal studies
Trust in Automation: Integrating Empirical Evidence on Factors That Influence Trust
OBJECTIVE: We systematically review recent empirical research on factors that influence trust in automation to present a three-layered trust model that synthesizes existing knowledge. BACKGROUND: Much of the existing research on factors that guide human-automation interaction is centered around trust, a variable that often determines the willingness of human operators to rely on automation. Studies have utilized a variety of different automated s…
