  • Trimming the fat

Open Access•R Ro, Allison Toth et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Organizational Behavior•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 6

A large number of concepts have been proposed to describe social skills and explain social goal attainment. In this work, we identified dozens of such concepts, which have been studied for many decades across a wide variety of social science disciplines. It has been suggested that the social skills literature lacks parsimony and conceptual clarity. We take stock of these challenges and describe their origins. We identify three conceptual limitati…

  • Scale Adaptation in Organizational Science Research

    Open Access•Eric D Heggestad, David J Scheaf et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Management•2019

In describing measures used in their research, authors frequently report having adapted a scale, indicating that they changed something about it. Although such changes can raise concerns about validity, there has been little discussion of this practice in our literature. To estimate the prevalence and identify key forms of scale adaptation, we conducted two studies of the literature. In Study 1, we reviewed the descriptions of all scales ( N = 2,…

  • Intra-individual Response Variability as an Indicator of Insufficient Effort Responding

Open Access•Alexandra M Dunn, Eric D Heggestad et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Business and Psychology•2018

  • Gender and career success

    Open Access•Katherine A Frear, Samantha C Paustian‐Underdahl et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Organizational Behavior•2018•Cited by: 4•References: 15

Despite women's advancements in the workplace, gender inequality persists. We classify and test two frameworks used to explain gender differences in career success: unequal attributes and unequal effects. The unequal attributes framework suggests that gender is related to other attributes, which result in unequal career outcomes for men and women (i.e., a mediated effect). The unequal effects framework suggests that even when men and women share …

  • What did you mean by that? Justice implications of interpersonal interactions for Latino/as

    Haley M Woznyj, Linda R Shanock et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Latina/o Psychology•2017•Cited by: 1

The labor force in the United States is increasingly becoming diverse, fueled by a growth in Latino/as, which increases the prevalence of cross-cultural interactions at work. The purpose of the current study is to understand the implications of microaggressions and communication values for Latino/as’ interpersonal and informational justice. Qualtrics Panels were used to recruit 259 working Latino/a adults in the United States. Regression analyses…

  • Personality retesting for managing intentional distortion

Jill E Ellingson, Eric D Heggestad et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•2012•References: 1

Self-report personality questionnaires often contain validity scales designed to flag individuals who intentionally distort their responses toward a more favorable characterization of themselves. Yet, there are no clear directives on how scores on these scales should be used by administrators when making high-stakes decisions about respondents. Two studies were conducted to investigate whether administrator-initiated retesting of flagged individu…

  • Polynomial Regression with Response Surface Analysis

Open Access•Linda Rhoades Shanock, Benjamin E Baran et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Business and Psychology•2010

  • An Inductive Exploration of the Social Effectiveness Construct Space

    Open Access•Eric D Heggestad, Morgan J Morrison et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality•2008

There is no agreement regarding the nature or number of dimensions that make up the social effectiveness domain. We inductively explore the relationships between a set of social effectiveness measures with the intention of identifying an initial set of dimensions. An exploratory factor analysis of the Social Competence Inventory (SCI, Schneider, 2001 ) resulted in the identification of four factors: Social Potency, Social Appropriateness, Social …

  • Intelligence, personality, and interests

    Phillip L Ackerman, Eric D Heggestad•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•1997•Cited by: 76

The authors review the development of the modern paradigm for intelligence assessment and application and consider the differentiation between intelligence-as-maximal performance and intelligence-as-typical performance. They review theories of intelligence, personality, and interest as a means to establish potential overlap. Consideration of intelligence-as-typical performance provides a basis for evaluation of intelligence-personality and intell…
