  • Taking Priming to Task

    Katherine White, Katherine R G White et al.•ARTICLE•Social Psychology•2018•References: 55

The current research examined potential moderators of gender and racial stereotype priming in sequential priming paradigms. Results from five experiments suggest that stereotype priming effects are more consistent in tasks that elicit both semantic priming and response competition (i.e., response priming paradigms) rather than tasks that evoke semantic priming alone (i.e., semantic priming paradigms). Recommendations for future stereotype priming…

  • On the automatic activation of attitudes

David R Herring, Katherine White et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•2013•Cited by: 8

Evaluation is a fundamental concept in psychological science. Limitations of self-report measures of evaluation led to an explosion of research on implicit measures of evaluation. One of the oldest and most frequently used implicit measurement paradigms is the evaluative priming paradigm developed by Fazio, Sanbonmatsu, Powell, and Kardes (1986). This paradigm has received extensive attention in psychology and is used to investigate numerous phen…

  • Understanding knowledge effects on attitude-behavior consistency

Leandre R Fabrigar, Richard E Petty et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•2006•Cited by: 11•References: 28

The role of properties of attitude-relevant knowledge in attitude- behavior consistency was explored in 3 experiments. In Experiment 1, attitudes based on behaviorally relevant knowledge predicted behavior better than attitudes based on low-relevance knowledge, especially when people had time to deliberate. Relevance, complexity, and amount of knowledge were investigated in Experiment 2. It was found that complexity increased attitude- behavior c…

  • Bioelectrical echoes from evaluative categorization

Stephen L Crite, Stephen L Crites et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1995•Cited by: 5

We report evidence of both correspondence and independence between participants' attitude report and a late positive potential (LPP) of the event-related potential. Attitude reports and LPPs to positive, neutral, and negative stimuli that were preceded by positive stimuli were recorded while participants either reported accurately their attitudes or misreported neutral or negative attitudes. Evaluatively inconsistent, in contrast to consistent, s…

  • Bioelectrical echoes from evaluative categorizations

John T Cacioppo, Stephen L Crite et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1994•Cited by: 6

Attitudes can be conceptualized in terms of the elementary operations of evaluative categorization and response selection-execution. This article describes a component of the event-related potential that is associated with the first of these operations. Ss were exposed to sequences of 6 traits and performed a dichotomous evaluative categorization task. Evaluative inconsistency was varied by embedding very positive, moderately positive, moderately…
