  • A second look at the validity of widely used Rorschach indices

    James M Wood, Howard N Garb et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•2015

We comment on the meta-analysis by Mihura, Meyer, Dumitrascu, and Bombel (2013), which examined the validity of scores in Exner's Comprehensive System (CS) for the Rorschach. First, we agree there is compelling evidence that 4 categories of cognitive scores-the "Rorschach cognitive quartet"-are related to cognitive ability/impairment and thought disorder. We now feel comfortable endorsing the use of these scores in some applied and research setti…

  • Observations on the validity of neuropsychological and personality assessment testing

    Open Access•Howard N Garb•ARTICLE•Australian Psychologist•2003•References: 1

The validity of neuropsychological testing is evaluated in the context of a growing controversy surrounding personality assessment. Claims made by a committee established by the American Psychological Association are disputed (e.g., that psychological tests are as valid as medical tests). Also, normative data for projective techniques and neuropsychological tests are contrasted. Normative data is not available for many projective techniques, and …

  • Failure of Rorschach-Comprehensive-System-based testimony to be admissible under the Daubert-Joiner-Kumho standard

William M Grove, R Christopher Barden et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology Public Policy and Law•2002•References: 58

The Comprehensive System for the Rorschach (RCS) is currently the subject of intense scientific criticism. The normative data for many RCS scores are seriously in error and tend to make normal individuals appear maladjusted. Reliability is inadequate for many RCS scores, and validity for the great majority of RCS scores has not been adequately demonstrated. In addition, a substantial number of Rorschach Workshops studies, cited by B. Ritzler, R. …

  • The Scientific Status of Projective Techniques

    Open Access•Scott O Lilienfeld, James M Wood et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Science in the…•2000

Although projective techniques continue to be widely used in clinical and forensic settings, their scientific status remains highly controversial. In this monograph, we review the current state of the literature concerning the psychometric properties (norms, reliability, validity, incremental validity, treatment utility) of three major projective instruments: Rorschach Inkblot Test, Thematic Apperception Test (TAT), and human figure drawings. We …

  • Clinical judgment, clinical training, and professional experience

    Howard N Garb•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•1989•Cited by: 9

Reviews studies on training, experience, and clinical judgment. The results on the validity of judgments generally fail to support the value of on-the-job experience in mental health fields. The validity results do provide limited support for the value of training. Other results suggest that experienced clinicians are better than less experienced judges at knowing which of their judgments are likely to be correct and which are likely to be wrong.…
