The adaptive shift
Disaster and Emergency Management (DEM) systems are increasingly challenged by the complexity and interconnectedness of today's DEM environment. While rigid, phased-based approaches to DEM provide valuable structural frameworks, they often fail in addressing the dynamic, non-linear, and unpredictable nature of contemporary disasters. This paper critically examines key challenges in DEM, including non-linearity, complexity, and the coordination of…
Exploring communication inefficiencies in disaster response
During disasters, emergency management and health agencies are typically the key providers of healthcare services, yet communication breakdowns between the two sectors often hinder response. This qualitative study explores the experiences of emergency managers and health professionals to identify challenges in cross-agency collaboration. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with professionals from New Zealand and the United Nations Office fo…
Constructivist Networked Grounded Theory
This paper introduces Constructivist Networked Grounded Theory (CNGT), an innovative methodology designed to address the analytical limitations of both Constructivist Grounded Theory (CGT) and Social Network Analysis (SNA) when applied independently to complex systems. In contexts such as Disaster and Emergency Management (DEM), where meaning-making processes are tightly interwoven with relational dynamics, existing methodologies often fail to pr…
Using Log-Linear Models for Longitudinal Data to Test Alternative Explanations for Stage-Like Phenomena
We show how log-linear models for multi-wave longitudinal data can be used to test hypotheses relating to stage-like relationships between variables. To illustrate our approach, we use an example from research on adolescent cigarette and marijuana experimentation. Previous research has documented that most adolescents experiment with substances in a stage-like sequence: first cigarettes and then marijuana. Several hypotheses have been suggested a…
A meta-analytic review of research on hostility and physical health
A new meta-analysis of research on hostility and physical health was conducted that includes 15 studies used in previous meta-analytic reviews and 30 new independent studies. Overall, the results suggest that hostility is an independent risk factor for coronary heart disease (CHD). For structured interview indicators of potential for hostility, the weighted mean r was .18. After controlling for other risk factors for CHD, the widely used Cook-Med…

A Test of the Psychosocial Vulnerability and Health Behavior Models of Hostility
Previous research has shown that interpersonal conflict and depression are cross-sectionally associated with hostility. Our objective was to determine whether hostility is longitudinally predictive of interpersonal distress and depression and to replicate previous research that suggests that hostility is a risk factor for other health behaviors (e.g., smoking and excessive alcohol use) and psychosocial health problems. We use data from the younge…

Imitative violence in the real world
Recently, Phillips [Am Soc Rev, 1983; 48:560–568] reported that the homicide rate increases on the third day after heavyweight championship prize fights. The present paper reports a reanalysis of Phillips's data using more sophisticated statistical techniques and examining several theoretically important variables not discussed by Phillips or his critics. Using a conservative analysis strategy, our results suggest that the increases in homicides …
Reasons for the trend toward null findings in research on Type A behavior
The findings of many studies conducted before 1978 suggest that Type A behavior (TAB) contributes to the development of coronary heart disease (CHD). In contrast, many recent studies have found no association between these variables. Through meta-analysis, several reasons for null findings are identified. First, a type of range restriction bias, disease-based spectrum (DBS) bias, produced many null findings. A study is vulnerable to DBS bias when…
