  • The Culture of Alcohol in the U.S. Military

    Open Access•Sarah O Meadows, Robin Beckman et al.•ARTICLE•Armed Forces & Society•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 39

Excessive alcohol use, especially binge and heavy drinking, represents a serious threat to force readiness across the Department of Defense. Though these behaviors are a matter of individual service member choice, they are influenced by perceptions of the culture of alcohol use in the military. This paper uses data from the 2018 Health Related Behaviors Survey of Active Duty service members to explore associations between perceived alcohol cultur…

  • Patterns of Vulnerabilities and Resources in U.S. Military Families

    Open Access•Thomas E Trail, Sarah O Meadows et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Issues•2017•References: 45

The appropriate format for services supporting military families depends on how vulnerabilities and resources are distributed across and within those families. If different types of vulnerabilities cluster together, then programs supporting families should combine multiple services rather than targeting specific concerns. Yet scant data exist about how vulnerabilities and resources covary within military families. The current study addressed this…

  • Employment Gaps Between Military Spouses and Matched Civilians

    Open Access•Sarah O Meadows, Beth Ann Griffin et al.•ARTICLE•Armed Forces & Society•2016•Cited by: 6•References: 16

Drawing upon data from the Deployment Life Study, this article examines whether female military spouses (SPs) are disadvantaged relative to matched civilian peers in terms of hours worked and earnings, paying particular attention to gaps among the highest educated women. Female SPs do earn less than comparable civilian peers in terms of raw dollars and percentage earnings. Moreover, military wives who are part of the labor force work as many hour…

  • Experiences of Sexual and Gender Minorities Caring for Adults with Non-Aids-Related Chronic Illnesses

    Karla T Washington, Jane A Mcelroy et al.•ARTICLE•Social Work Research•2015•Cited by: 3•References: 16

A number of marginalized communities receive inadequate attention in the extensive body of existing research on informal caregivers; this is particularly true of the sexual and gender minority (SGM) community. This article features a review of the evidence regarding the experiences of SGMs involved in the informal care of chronically ill friends or family members and examines the specific research strategies that have been involved in developing …

  • The Association Between Perceptions of Social Support and Maternal Mental Health

    Open Access•Sarah O Meadows•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Issues•2011•Cited by: 3•References: 40

The question of how to best measure family processes so that longitudinal experiences within the family are accurately captured has become an important issue for family scholars. Using the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study ( N = 2,158), this article focuses on the association between trajectories of perceived supportiveness from biological fathers and mothers' mental health problems 5 years after a birth. The relationship status between …

  • Marital Trajectories and Mortality Among US Adults

    M E Dupre, Audrey N Beck et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Epidemiology•2009

More than a century of empirical evidence links marital status to mortality. However, the hazards of dying associated with long-term marital trajectories and contributing risk factors are largely unknown. The authors used 1992-2006 prospective data from a cohort of US adults to investigate the impact of current marital status, marriage timing, divorce and widow transitions, and marital durations on mortality. Multivariate hazard ratios were signi…

  • Is It There When You Need It

    Open Access•Sarah O Meadows•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Issues•2009•Cited by: 16•References: 54

Little is known about the effect of incongruity between perception of, or belief in, the availability of support and actual receipt of support during a time of need. This article examines associations between belief in the future availability of instrumental support (e.g., child care, temporary housing, and financial assistance), subsequent reception of inadequate support, and depression in a socioeconomically diverse sample of new mothers. Recei…

  • Family Structure and Fathers' Well-Being

    Open Access•Sarah O Meadows•ARTICLE•Journal of Health and Social…•2009•Cited by: 16•References: 49

The association between marital status and health among men has been well documented, but few studies track health trajectories following family structure transitions among unmarried fathers. Using the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study this article examines trajectories of paternal mental health and self-rated health, focusing on transitions into and out of residential relationships with the child's biological mother or a new partner dur…

  • Family Structure Transitions and Maternal Parenting Stress

Open Access•Carey E Cooper, Mclanahan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•2009•Cited by: 90•References: 49

Data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (N = 4,176) are used to examine family structure transitions and maternal parenting stress. Using multilevel modeling, we found that mothers who exit coresidential relationships with biological fathers or enter coresidential relationships with nonbiological fathers reported higher levels of parenting stress than mothers in stable coresidential relationships. Mothers who enter coresidential …

  • Stability and Change in Family Structure and Maternal Health Trajectories

    Open Access•Sarah O Meadows, Mclanahan et al.•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•2008•Cited by: 80•References: 82

Recent increases in births to unmarried parents, and the instability surrounding these relationships, have raised concerns about the possible health effects associated with changes in family structure. Using data from the Fragile Families and Child Well-Being Study (N = 2,448), this article examines trajectories of maternal mental and physical health. We specifically focus on mothers' transitions into and out of residential relationships with a c…

  • Race-ethnic inequality and psychological distress

    J S Brown, Sarah O Meadows et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2007•Cited by: 43•References: 19

Social inequality is well established in the mental health of race-ethnic groups, but little is known about this disparity from adolescence to young adulthood. This study examined differences in trajectories of depressive symptoms across 4 race-ethnic groups (Whites, Blacks, Hispanics, and Asians) using 3 waves of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. Latent trajectory analyses showed race-ethnic variations among both females and …

  • Disaggregating the Effects of Marital Trajectories on Health

    Open Access•M E Dupre, Sarah O Meadows•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Issues•2007•Cited by: 30•References: 47

Recent studies linking marital status and health increasingly focus on marital trajectories to examine the relationship from a life course perspective. However, research has been slow to bridge the theoretical concept of a marital trajectory with its measurement. This study uses retrospective and prospective data to model the age-dependent effects of marital sequences, timing, transitions, and durations on physical health. Results indicate that m…

Using the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, we examine the association between parental major depressive and generalized anxiety disorders and child behavior problems across family types: married, cohabiting, involved nonresident father, and noninvolved nonresident father. Among 3-year-olds in all families, maternal anxiety/depression is associated with increased odds of anxious/depressed, attention deficit, and oppositional defiant dis…
