  • Treatments of Differential Item Functioning: A Comparison of Four Methods

    Open Access•Xiaowen Liu, H Jane Rogers•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•2022

Test fairness is critical to the validity of group comparisons involving gender, ethnicities, culture, or treatment conditions. Detection of differential item functioning (DIF) is one component of efforts to ensure test fairness. The current study compared four treatments for items that have been identified as showing DIF: deleting, ignoring, multiple-group modeling, and modeling DIF as a secondary dimension. Results of this study provide indicat…

  • Mh: A Fortran 77 Program to Compute the Mantel-Haenszel Statistic for Detecting Differential Item Functioning

    Open Access•H Jane Rogers, Ronald K Hambleton•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1994

This software program computes the Mantel-Haenszel statistic that is used for detecting differential item functioning (DIF). The main features of the program are (a) the capability of using total test score or a "purified" test score as the internal criterion for matching examinees, (b) using an external criterion for matching examinees if one is available, (c) complete descriptive statistics on the test data, (d) complete reference and focal gro…

  • Detecting Differential Item Functioning Using Logistic Regression Procedures

    Open Access•Hariharan Swaminathan, H Jane Rogers•ARTICLE•Journal of Educational Measurement•1990

A logistic regression model for characterizing differential item functioning (DIF) between two groups is presented. A distinction is drawn between uniform and nonuniform DIF in terms of the parameters of the model. A statistic for testing the hypothesis of no DIF is developed. Through simulation studies, it is shown that the logistic regression procedure is more powerful than the Mantel‐Haenszel procedure for detecting nonuniform DIF and as power…

  • Evaluation of Computer Simulated Baseline Statistics for Use in Item Bias Studies

    Open Access•H Jane Rogers, Ronald K Hambleton•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1989

Though item bias statistics are widely recommended for use in test development and test analysis work, problems arise in their interpretation. The purpose of the present research was to evaluate the validity of logistic test models and computer simulation methods for providing a frame of reference for item bias statistic interpretations. Specifically, the intent was to produce simulated sampling distributions of item bias statistics under the hyp…

  • Preliminary Validation of the Abbreviated Spanier Dyadic Adjustment Scale: Some Psychometric Data Regarding a Screening Test of Marital Adjustment

    Open Access•Christopher F Sharpley, H Jane Rogers•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1984

The measurement of marital adjustment remains of major concern to researchers and clinicians. In spite of criticism, several research studies have reported the use of various measures of marital adjustment, most recently the Spanier Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS). This paper reports the field-testing and preliminary validation of a series of items from the DAS which have been previously suggested to be nearly as accurate as the entire scale for cl…

  • Comparative effectiveness of professional and paraprofessional helpers

John Hattie, John A Hattie et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•1984•Cited by: 22

on the relative effectiveness of professional and paraprofessional counselors has been inconclusive, this article uses meta-analysis procedures to help resolve some of the contentious issues that have been raised by these researchers. Effect sizes based on 154 comparisons from 39 studies indicated that clients who seek help from paraprofessionals are more likely to achieve resolution of their problem than those who consult professionals; moderato…

  • Attitudes to, and knowledge of counselling in Australia

    Open Access•H Jane Rogers, Helen Rogers et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Psychologist•1983•Cited by: 2•References: 1

A survey of 504 pems from nine occupational categories spread across N.S.W. and Queensland indicated that counselling is widely misunderstood, but considered of value to thaw who have had experience of it. Data regarding the nature of counselling, functions and benefits/drawbacks imply a need for greater information-spreading by the counselling profession. Pleasingly, the strongest support for counselling came from previous clients
