Need for cross-level iterative re-entry in models of visual processing
Two main hypotheses regarding the directional flow of visual information processing in the brain have been proposed: feed-forward (bottom-up) and re-entrant (top-down). Early theories espoused feed-forward principles in which processing was said to advance from simple to increasingly complex attributes terminating at a higher area where conscious perceptions occur. That view is disconfirmed by advances in neuroanatomy and neurophysiology, which i…
What factors influence the switch from unitary to divided attention
Attention is a sterile concept; iterative reentry is a fertile substitute
Relative blindsight arises from a criterion confound in metacontrast masking
Attentional switching in spatial and nonspatial domains
Attentional switching in spatial and nonspatial domains
Inverse-intensity effect in duration of visible persistence
Duration of visible persistence can vary inversely with stimulus intensity. This inverse-intensity effect is obtained by varying the intensity of the stimuli or of the background, provided that the variations extend into the mesopic range. A similar relationship--known as the Ferry-Porter law--holds for the critical frequency at fusion (CFF). The authors propose that studies of CFF, 2-pulse threshold, and visible persistence can be encompassed wi…
Effects of apparent pain in others on observer's reaction time
Effects of Unpaired Pre-Acquisition Exposure of CS and UCS on Classical Conditioning of the Nictitating Membrane Response of the Albino Rabbit
The effects of the presentation, prior to acquisition training of (1) “no stimulation,” (2) CS alone trials, (3) UCS alone trials, and (4) CS-UCS unpaired trials were investigated in conditioning and extinction of the nictitating membrane response. The principal findings were: (a) significantly higher blink rates in adaptation for the groups receiving the UCS, (b) no differences among groups in acquisition, (c) greater resistance to extinction by…
