Testing two-state theories with operating characteristics and a posteriori probabilities
Testing two-state theories of perception and memory with operating characteristics and posteriori probabilities
Numerical Relations, Similarity, and Short‐term Recognition Memory for Pairs of Digits
Recognition memory for pairs of digits after a 6 sec interference task was superior for pairs containing a zero or one and for pairs consisting of two identical digits than for ‘ordinary’ pairs. Pairs consisting of digits in forward or backward sequence (e.g. 56 or 43) and pairs where one digit is a multiple of the other were remembered slightly better than ‘ordinary’ pairs. False recognition rates were highest for test pairs that had the highest…
Cues That Elicit Analytic‐deductive Methods in Concept Attainment
In inference concept attainment some subjects draw conclusions about concepts (global‐hypothesis method) and some subjects draw conclusions about the relevance or irrelevance of dimensions (analytic‐deductive method). Experiments were performed to determine whether the presence or absence of certain cues accompanying inference concept attainment problems would affect the incidence of analytic‐deductive methods in these problems. Two such cues wer…

A Regression Analysis of Problem Solving in a Binary Choice Task
This study was designed to investigate three problems concerning human behavior in a two-choice learning situation. Rather than attempt a summary of research on two-choice learning we refer the reader to Bush and Mosteller (1955) and Feldman (1959). The first concern of this study was to develop and test certain trial-to-trial measures of the decision process. The basic trialto-trial measure is s's choice, left or right, on each experimental tria…
