  • Expressive Timing in a Debussy Prelude

    Open Access•Bruno H Repp•ARTICLE•Musicae Scientiae•1997

The expressive timing of 10 famous pianists' performances of Debussy's prelude, La fille aux cheveux de lin, was measured from acoustic recordings and compared to the expressive timing of performances by 10 graduate student pianists, recorded after only a brief rehearsal on a Yamaha Disklavier in MIDI format. Despite the-large differences between the two groups in preparation, experience, age, date of birth, and national origin, their average exp…

  • Cues to the Perception of Taiwanese Tones

    Open Access•Hwei-Bing Lin, Bruno H Repp•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1989•Cited by: 8•References: 7

A labeling test with synthetic speech stimuli was carried out to determine to what extent the two dimensions of fundamental frequency (F 0 ), height and movement, and syllable duration provide cues to tonal distinctions in Taiwanese. The data show that the high level vs. mid level tones and the high falling vs. mid falling tones can be reliably distinguished by F 0 height alone, whereas the distinction between tones with dissimilar contours, such…

  • Integration and Segregation in Speech Perception

    Open Access•Bruno H Repp•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1988•Cited by: 1•References: 157

This paper reviews the various applications of the concepts of integration and segregation in speech perception research. These applications are illustrated with selected examples from the literature. After laying out some conceptual issues and basic assumptions, the review discusses auditory temporal and spectral integration, integration of phonetic information in its various forms, auditory temporal, spatial, and spectral segregation, segregati…

  • Difference in Second-Formant Transitions between Aspirated and Unaspirated Stop Consonants Preceding [α]

    Open Access•Bruno H Repp, Hwei-Bing Lin•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1987•Cited by: 1•References: 29

Perceptual experiments with synthetic speech have shown that the category boundary on an acoustic [pa]— [ta] (/ba/-/da/) continuum (obtained by varying the onset frequencies of the second and third formants) is closer to the labial endpoint than the boundary on a [p h a]-[t h a] (/pa/-/ta/) continuum. of several possible explanations, the most plausible seems to be that natural unaspirated and aspirated stops have different formant transitions. T…

  • Closure Duration and Release Burst Amplitude Cues To Stop Consonant Manner and Place of Articulation

    Open Access•Bruno H Repp•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1984•Cited by: 6•References: 10

The perception of stop consonants was studied in a constant neutral [s-1] context. Truncated natural [p] , [t], and [k] release bursts at two intensities were preceded by variable silent closure intervals. The bursts, though spectrally distinct, conveyed little specific place information but contributed to the perception of stop manner by reducing the amount of silence required to perceive a stop (relative to a burstless stimulus). Burst amplitud…

  • Relative Amplitude of Aspiration Noise as a Voicing Cue for Syllable-Initial Stop Consonants

    Open Access•Bruno H Repp•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1979•Cited by: 18•References: 14

The present experiments demonstrate that amplitude of aspiration noise (relative to the following periodic portion of the vowel) is a cue for the distinction between voiced and voiceless syllable-initial stop consonants in English, and that it can be traded for voice onset time (VOT). In Experiment I, the category boundary on a synthetic VOT continuum (/da/-/ta/) was found to be a linear function of the amplitude ratio between the aspirated and u…
