DSM-5 criterion-a-based trauma types in service members and veterans seeking treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder
Because of discrepancies between participant and assessor typologies, clinical researchers should use participants' ratings, and these should trump assessor judgment. Differences in pretreatment behavioral and mental health problems across some participant-endorsed trauma types partially support the validity of the participant ratings. Perceptions and experiences of web-prolonged exposure for posttraumatic stress disorder: A mixed-methods study
Perceptions and experience of Web-PE are favorable and help to highlight the strengths (e.g., flexibility) and challenges (e.g., requiring self-motivation) associated with Web-treatment for PTSD. The results of this study may inform further development of Web-PE or other Web-based treatment programs. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved)
Temporal-dimensional examination of the Scale for Suicidal Ideation in a cohort of service members in treatment for PTSD
The cyclic nature of suicidal ideation suggests that assessment timing and context could influence observed associations with other variables. Analytic approaches and clinical methods that do not account for the temporal dynamics of suicide risk could miss these properties, thereby hindering efforts to identify mechanisms underlying the relationship between PTSD and suicidal thoughts and behaviors and limiting opportunities for proactive and time…
Trauma Exposure and PTSD in Philadelphia Community Mental Health
The effects of web-prolonged exposure among military personnel and veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder
Web-PE significantly reduced PTSD symptoms in both studies, although the reductions in PTSD symptoms were greater among open trial participants, who were specifically seeking a web-based treatment. Future research should evaluate Web-PE relative to another web-based treatment. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved)
An Innovative Mobile Game for Screening of Pediatric PTSD: A Study in Primary Care Settings
The association between cognitive coping strategies and treatment outcomes in smokers with PTSD
These findings suggest that maladaptive cognitive coping strategies are not necessarily a contraindication for overall outcomes in integrated PTSD and smoking treatment, although they may influence improvement in hyperarousal symptoms. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2020 APA, all rights reserved)
The efficacy of 90-minute versus 60-minute sessions of prolonged exposure for posttraumatic stress disorder: Design of a randomized controlled trial in active duty military personnel
The results of this study will inform dissemination efforts in military, veteran, and civilian sectors. Further, identifying mechanisms of therapeutic change will answer important theoretical questions about how PE works, in order to refine and increase the efficacy and efficiency of PE to better meet the needs of individuals with PTSD. Women’s self-perceptions in the aftermath of trauma: The role of trauma-centrality and trauma-type
Our findings highlight the roles of trauma-centrality and trauma-type in the erosion of self-perceptions following trauma. Our data emphasize the importance of considering the multiple factors influencing self-perceptions and of adopting a multifaceted conceptualization of the self in trauma-related research and clinical practice. Emotion regulation is associated with PTSD and depression among female adolescent survivors of childhood sexual abuse
Mediation analyses showed that emotion regulation difficulties were associated with both PTSD and depressive symptoms rather than fitting a unidirectional model. These findings are consistent with and extend previous research and highlight the importance of emotion regulation in adolescent survivors of sexual abuse. (PsycINFO Database Record
Ethnoracial differences in PTSD symptoms and trauma-related cognitions in treatment-seeking active duty military personnel for PTSD
These findings suggest ethnoracial variation in PTSD symptom burden and posttraumatic cognitions among treatment-seeking service members with PTSD. Attending to cultural factors related to differences in PTSD presentation and cognitive coping strategies during the assessment and treatment process could increase rapport and lead to more comprehensive trauma processing. Posttraumatic stress disorder in incarcerated women: A call for evidence-based treatment
The majority of women who enter the criminal justice system, most of whom are poor and women of color, have suffered from significant lifetime trauma exposure that can lead to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is essential to identify the prevalence of PTSD among this population in order to identify treatment needs. Most studies on PTSD among incarcerated women have focused on PTSD in jailed populations, including women awaiting trial. Usi…
Maternal and Child Expressed Emotion as Predictors of Treatment Response in Pediatric Obsessive–Compulsive Disorder
Interpretation bias in social anxiety as detected by event-related brain potentials
Little is known about psychophysiological correlates of interpretation bias in social anxiety. To address this issue, the authors measured event-related brain potentials (ERPs) in high and low socially anxious individuals during a task wherein ambiguous scenarios were resolved with either a positive or negative ending. Specifically, the authors examined modulations of the P600, an ERP that peaks approximately 600 ms following stimulus onset and i…

Sex differences in trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder: A quantitative review of 25 years of research
Meta-analyses of studies yielding sex-specific risk of potentially traumatic events (PTEs) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) indicated that female participants were more likely than male participants to meet criteria for PTSD, although they were less likely to experience PTEs. Female participants were more likely than male participants to experience sexual assault and child sexual abuse, but less likely to experience accidents, nonsexual a…
A Propensity Score Analysis of Brief Worksite Crisis Interventions after the World Trade Center Disaster: Implications for Intervention and Research
BACKGROUND: Postdisaster crisis interventions have been viewed by some as appropriate to enhance the mental health status of persons affected by large-scale traumatic events. However, studies and systematic reviews have challenged the effectiveness of these efforts. OBJECTIVES: The focus of this study was to examine the impact of brief mental health interventions received by employees at the worksite after the World Trade Center disaster (WTCD) a…
The Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory: Development and validation of a short version.
This article reports on the development of a revised version of the Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory (OCI; E. B. Foa, M. J. Kozak, P. Salkovskis, M. E. Coles, & N. Amir, 1998), a psychometrically sound, theoretically driven, self-report measure. The revised OCI (OCI-R) improves on the parent version in 3 ways: It eliminates the redundant frequency scale, simplifies the scoring of the subscales, and reduces overlap across subscales. The reliability …
The Child PTSD Symptom Scale: A Preliminary Examination of its Psychometric Properties
Reports on the development and preliminary validation of the Child PTSD Symptom Scale (CPSS) for children and adolescents. The CPSS is a new instrument that was developed to assess the severity of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.; American Psychiatric Association, 1994) posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms in children exposed to trauma. The CPSS was administered to 75 school-age children approximately 2 years after…
Psychometric properties of the Social Phobia Inventory (SPIN): New self-rating scale
BACKGROUND: Of available self-rated social phobia scales, none assesses the spectrum of fear, avoidance, and physiological symptoms, all of which are clinically important. Because of this limitation, we developed the Social Phobia Inventory (SPIN). AIMS: To establish psychometric validation of the SPIN. METHOD: Subjects from three clinical trials and two control groups were given the 17-item, self-rated SPIN. Validity was assessed against several…
Psychological and Environmental Factors Associated with Partner Violence
This article presents a brief summary of the literature on variables associated with cessation or continuation of partner violence with the aim of generating two conceptual models: psychological and environmental. Toward this goal, the authors first examine existing theoretical models of women's influence on partner violence. Second, they review psychological and environmental variables associated with women's influence on partner violence. To ca…
Emotional processing of fear: Exposure to corrective information
In this article we propose mechanisms that govern the processing of emotional information, particularly those involved in fear eduction. Emotions are viewed as represented by information structures in memory, and anxiety is thought to occur when an information structure that serves as program to escape or avoid danger is activated. Emotional processing is defined as the modification of memory structures that underlie emotions. It is argued that s…
Uncontrollability and unpredictability in post-traumatic stress disorder: An animal model
The disturbances observed in animals subjected to unpredictable and uncontrollable aversive events resemble post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and thus may constitute an animal model of this disorder. It is argued that the similarity between animals' symptoms and those of trauma victims may reflect common etiological factors. Relevant experiments in which animals exhibit generalized fear and arousal, discrete fear of a conditioned sti…

Treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder in rape victims: A comparison between cognitive-behavioral procedures and counseling.
A prospective examination of post‐traumatic stress disorder in rape victims
Post‐traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and related psychopathology were examined in 95 female rape victims beginning soon after the assault (mean = 12.64 days). Subjects were assessed weekly for 12 weeks. Ninety‐four percent of women met symptomatic criteria for PTSD at Assessment 1, decreasing to 65% at Assessment 4 (mean = 35 days postassault), and 47% at Assessment 12 (mean = 94 days postassault). PTSD and related psychopathology decreased shar…

Reliability and validity of a brief instrument for assessing post‐traumatic stress disorder
This study examines the psychometric properties of two versions of the PTSD Sympton Scale (PSS). The scale contains 17 items that diagnose PTSD according to DSM‐III‐R criteria and assess the severity of PTSD symptoms. An interview and self‐report version of the PSS were administered to a sample of 118 recent rape and non‐sexual assault victims. The results indicate that both versions of the PSS have satisfactory internal consistency, high test‐re…
Change in rape narratives during exposure therapy for posttraumatic stress disorder
This paper presents a coding system developed to explore changes in narratives of rape during therapy for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) involving repeated reliving and recounting of the trauma. Relationships between narrative categories hypothesized to be affected by the treatment and treatment outcome were also examined. As hypothesized, narrative length increased from pre‐ to post‐treatment, percentage of actions and dialogue decreased a…
