  • Schedule-Induced Chronic Hypertension

John L Falk, Maisy Tang et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1977

Rats were fed on an intermittent-feeding schedule one 45-mg food pellet every 90 sec for 5 hours per day (experimental group) or an equivalent food ration as a single, daily feeding (control group). All animals were mononephrectomized and given saline to drink. Experimental animals became polydipsic (schedule-induced polydipsia). The rate and amount of fluid intakes between the two groups were controlled in the second experiment. In both experime…

  • Water Intake and NaCl Appetite in Sodium Depletion

    Open Access•John L Falk•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1965

Rats were sodium depleted by intraperitoneal dialysis (IPD) to determine: (a) whether there is a thirst mechanism not dependent on increases in effective osmotic pressure and (b) whether a sodium chloride appetite could be induced by this rapid means of sodium depletion. IPD resulted in increased intakes of water and 3% NaCl solution when these were tested independently (single-stimulus method) A second IPD performed after 2 days of recovery prod…

  • Automation of Pattern Discrimination in the Rat

    Open Access•John L Falk, Constance J D’Amato et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1962

Investigation of visual discriminative processes in animals has been facilitated by the use of automatic equipment and improved techniques of behavioral control. Visual generalization gradients and continuous changes in absolute threshold have been measured with new precision (Guttman, 1956; Blough, 1958). As part of a program evaluating the pathological effects of prenatally administered ionizing radiation (Hicks, D'Amato, & Lowe, 1959), the fol…
