The Differences Between Individuals Engaging in Nonsuicidal Self-Injury and Suicide Attempt Are Complex (vs. Complicated or Simple)
Findings were consistent with complex differences between people who engage in NSSI and suicide attempts. Specific complicated algorithms were either insufficient (cross-validation results) or unnecessary (bootstrap optimism results) to distinguish between these groups with high accuracy
Interventions for suicide and self-injury: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials across nearly 50 years of research
Why Do People Hurt Themselves? A New Conceptual Model of Nonsuicidal Self-Injury
The motivation to avoid pain and injury is a fundamental instinct, crucial to the survival of individuals and species. Yet, each year, millions of people purposefully and directly injure themselves in the absence of suicidal intent. Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) has perplexed psychologists for decades. To advance understanding of NSSI, we present a new model—the benefits and barriers model of NSSI. This model builds on the supported elements of …
Depression and hopelessness as risk factors for suicide ideation, attempts and death: Meta-analysis of longitudinal studies
Background Many studies have documented robust relationships between depression and hopelessness and subsequent suicidal thoughts and behaviours; however, much weaker and non-significant effects have also been reported. These inconsistencies raise questions about whether and to what degree these factors confer risk for suicidal thoughts and behaviours. Aims This study aimed to evaluate the magnitude and clinical utility of depression and hopeless…
