  • Examining the individual-level impact of neighborhood-level violent crime on resident mental health

    Open Access•Linzy M Pinkerton, Natalie R Stevens et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2026

Being a parent/caregiver introduces a unique set of stressors into an individual's life, as they are now responsible for the well-being of someone other than themselves. To support parents and families, it is important that researchers, practitioners, and policymakers understand how different environmental factors, such as neighborhood crime, uniquely impact them. This study indicates that parents may suffer from more depressive symptoms because …

  • A Feasibility and Acceptability Trial of Narrative Exposure Therapy During Pregnancy

  • Communal mastery and associations with depressive and PTSD symptomatology among urban trauma-exposed women

    Open Access•Michelle L Miller, Natalie R Stevens et al.•ARTICLE•Cultural Diversity & Ethnic…•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 9

Objective: Racial and ethnic minority women from low-resource urban communities experience disproportionately high rates of trauma exposure. Higher rates of lifetime trauma exposure are strongly associated with subsequent psychological sequela, specifically depression and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Communal mastery is the ability to cope with challenges and achieve goals by being closely interconnected with friends, family, and signifi…

  • Examining moderators of the relationship between social support and self-reported PTSD symptoms: A meta-analysis

    Open Access•Alyson K Zalta, Vanessa Tirone et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•2021•Cited by: 14•References: 2

Social support is one of the most robust predictors of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Yet, little is known about factors that moderate the relationship between social support and PTSD symptom severity. This meta-analysis estimated the overall effect size of the relationship between self-reported social support and PTSD severity and tested meaningful demographic, social support, and trauma characteristics that may moderate this association …

  • Exposure therapy for PTSD during pregnancy: A feasibility, acceptability, and case series study of Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET)

    Open Access•Natalie R Stevens, Michelle L Miller et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Psychology•2020

Results suggest that a brief exposure therapy PTSD treatment can be successfully implemented during pregnancy, suggesting promising results for conducting a larger-scale investigation. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT04525469. Registered 20 August 2020-Retrospectively registered, https://register.clinicaltrials.gov/prs/app/template/EditRecord.vm?epmode=View&listmode=Edit&uid=U00058T2&ts=3&sid=S000A59A&cx=-w1vnvn

  • Web-based trauma intervention for veterans has physical health payoff in randomized trial

Natalie R Stevens, Lucie Holmgreen et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2016

Findings indicate that Vets Prevail reduces perceptions of physical health impairment by reducing PTSD symptomology. It is also possible that treatment initiated more complex, bidirectional relationships such that improvements in psychological distress and in perceived physical health impairment reinforced each other over time. Findings demonstrate that Vets Prevail may help veterans overcome traditional barriers to care and achieve improvements …
