  • The Role of Personality in Vaccination Attitudes: A Replication and Extension

    Open Access•Holly A Kendell, Philip A Vernon•ARTICLE•International Journal of Psychology•2026

This study is a replication and extension of previous research which demonstrated that individuals who identified as Vaxxers and Anti-vaxxers during the COVID-19 pandemic differ in several personality traits. We aimed to further explore personality trait differences between vaccine supporters and opponents. Our study recruited 219 individuals via mTurk who either strongly supported or strongly opposed being vaccinated for COVID-19. Participants c…

  • Attached to dating apps: Attachment orientations and preferences for dating apps

    Open Access•Kristi Chin, Robin S Edelstein et al.•ARTICLE•Mobile Media & Communication•2018•Cited by: 6•References: 7

Our study examines attachment-related differences in the use of dating applications (dating apps). We collected online survey data regarding people’s attachment orientation and dating app preferences. People with a more anxious attachment orientation were more likely to report using dating apps than people lower in anxious attachment; people with a more avoidant attachment orientation were less likely to report using dating apps than people lower…

  • Overlap between the general factor of personality and emotional intelligence: A meta-analysis

Dimitri Van Der Linden, Keri A Pekaar et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•2017•Cited by: 17•References: 1

We examine the relationship between the general factor of personality (GFP) and emotional intelligence (EI) and specifically test the hypothesis that the GFP is a social effectiveness factor overlapping conceptually with EI. Presented is an extensive meta-analysis in which the associations between the GFP, extracted from the Big Five dimensions, with various EI measures is examined. Based on a total sample of k = 142 data sources (N = 36,268) the…

  • The Origins of Political Attitudes and Behaviours: An Analysis Using Twins

Open Access•Edward Bell, Julie Aitken Schermer et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Political…•2009•Cited by: 26•References: 58

This article provides a behaviour genetic heritability analysis of several political issues, including social and economic conservatism, general interest in politics, attitudes toward the major Canadian federal parties, federal party identification and national vote choice. Substantial genetic effects were found for four of six political attitude scales, with heritability values ranging from 41 per cent to 73 per cent. Genetic effects are also re…

  • A behavioral genetic investigation of the Dark Triad and the Big 5

Open Access•Philip A Vernon, Vanessa Villani et al.•ARTICLE•Personality and Individual…•2008

  • A behavioral genetic study of trait emotional intelligence

    Philip A Vernon, K V Petrides et al.•ARTICLE•Emotion•2008

Numerous models of emotional intelligence (EI) have proposed the existence of hitherto undiscovered mental abilities, competencies, and skills. The theory of trait emotional intelligence suggests that the content domains of these models invariably contain permutations of personality traits. The two studies in this article examine the heritability of trait EI scores with a view to demonstrating empirically that the construct has a similar level of…

  • Covariance structure of neuroticism and agreeableness: A twin and molecular genetic analysis of the role of the serotonin transporter gene

Kerry L Jang, W John Livesley et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•2001•Cited by: 5

The Revised NEO Personality Inventory domains of Neuroticism and Agreeableness are considered factorially distinct despite several intercorrelations between these domains. The genetic correlation, an index of the degree to which these intercorrelations are caused by genetic influences, was estimated using data from 913 monozygotic and 562 dizygotic volunteer twin pairs from Canada, Germany, and Japan. The serotonin transporter gene, 5-HTTLPR, was…

  • The heritability of attitudes: A study of twins

James M Olson, Philip A Vernon et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•2001•Cited by: 24•References: 33

The genetic basis of individual differences in attitudes was examined in a survey of 195 pairs of monozygotic twins and 141 pairs of same-sex dizygotic twins. A principal components analysis of the 30 attitude items in the survey identified 9 attitude factors, of which 6 yielded significant heritability coefficients. Nonshared environmental factors accounted for the most variance in the attitude factors. Possible mediators of attitude heritabilit…

  • Fluid Intelligence, Crystallized Intelligence, and the Openness/Intellect Factor

Open Access•Michael C Ashton, Kibeom Lee et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Personality•2000•Cited by: 13•References: 21

  • Developmental changes in speed of information processing in young children

    Linda T Miller, Philip A Vernon•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•1997•Cited by: 3

This study investigated developmental increases in processing speed in young children, relative to adults, with only nonverbal stimuli. R. Kail's (1991) model of the rate of change in processing speed from childhood to adulthood was evaluated. Processing speed was measured in 34 children at 4 years, 37 at 5 years, and 38 at 6 years and in 43 adults, with a battery of 8 computer-administered tests. Results showed clear age-related increases in pro…

  • Environmental predictors of personality differences: A twin and sibling study

Philip A Vernon, Kerry L Jang et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1997•Cited by: 2

Nonshared environmental influences have consistently been shown to account for at least as much of the variance in personality as genetic factors, but the nature of these nonshared influences has largely remained unidentified. To identify environmental predictors of differential personality development, the Personality Research Form and 4 measures of people's perceptions of their background environments were administered to 143 adult twin pairs (…

  • Geographic variations in elderly hospital and surgical discharge rates, New York State

Beverly Pasley, Philip A Vernon et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1987•Cited by: 5•References: 7

Hospital and surgical discharges for 1981, as recorded by the uniform hospital discharge data of New York State, were aggregated by county of residence and converted into age-sex adjusted rates. Elderly hospital discharge and surgery rates in New York State, 1981, varied 2.4- and 2-fold, respectively. Discharge rates of elderly with specific surgical procedures showed even greater variation. However, proportions of highly complex and non-elective…
