Following in our Acehnese Islamic epigraphy series, no. 9 deals with the cemetery of Puni. Over a period of a century for the most part one finds there the tombs of the members of the family of …
Note on the Sultanate of Peudada, Late 15th-Early 16th Century. [ Islamic Epigraphy of Aceh. 5] The authors, pursuing the publication of the ancient Islamic inscriptions of the Aceh Province, present in this article the few epigraphs related to the micro-state of Peudada (present Bireuen) that managed to gain its independence for a short while at the turn of the 16th century
An Unusual Object Inscribed with Arabic Letters in the Minang Area In the region of Batusangkar (West Sumatra), in the village of Tanjung, a disk-shaped and rather heavy object is offered to be lifted during the local fairs. The one who succeeds would see his wish granted. It was briefly published in 1914, in a short article of the journal Oudheidkundig Verslag, with pictures showing engraved Arabic letters. These letters belong to three differen…

Note sur le sultanat de Pidir. Début du XVIe siècle [Épigraphie islamique d’Aceh. 3]
Continuing the publication of Islamic inscriptions from North Sumatra, the authors present here the only two ancient tombs of the short-lived sultanate of Pidie. The first is the only known epitaph of a sovereign of this petty state who died in 1511, and the second that of a daughter of a mu’allim (probably a Muslim religious teacher), who died in 1562. Historical conclusions will be drawn only after completion of the analysis of all the tombston…
The first note shows how tradition can supersede history. In Banda Aceh, an ancient sacred tombstone locally thought to be that of a Syrian or Turkish gunner was, after the tsunami, transformed by the Turkish Red Crescent into a large cemetery of “ Ottoman commanders and soldiers” supposed to have come to Sumatra to fight the Portuguese on the side of Aceh. Yet, the Arabic inscription still reads that the grave belongs to an Acehnese Sultan of th…

Pavel Durdik spent 5 years in Aceh as a military surgeon for the Dutch troups during the war between 1878 and 1883. Accounts of a military surgeon, 1877-1883), published in 1893. The book has never been translated. Here we present long extracts in French. The testimony o…

Ludvik Kalus In this second "Reappraisal of the oldest Nusantara Islamic tombstones", L. Kalus and C. Guillot analyse the famous Leran stone, dated AD 1082 and believed to be the oldest Islamic tombstone in Southeast Asia. Ravaisse's interpretation of the epitaph (1925) only necessitates minor revisions. The palaeography of the inscription is exceptional and cannot be related to any part of the Islamic world, even though some of its features are …

Ludvik Kalus In 1922 Paul Ravaisse published two Arabie inscriptions in the Journal Asiatique. Since that time their assumed Cham provenance has been taken for granted and they have been referred to abundantly as the sole direct sources for the reconstruction of a Muslim presence in Champa in the eleventh century. However a new analysis, based on multifarious elements of comparison, makes it possible to trace with a high degree of probability the…
Mengkaji Ulang Nisan Kuno Nusantara
This article presents a review of studies and theories regarding gravestones in Leran (near Surabaya), East Java. The gravestones in question are of significance because they contain old Islamic (Arabic) inscriptions, and for that reason have been regarded so far a representing the strongest and oldest evidence of the arrival of lslam in Southeast Asia in the eleventh century. Written on one gravestone are the words 'Bint Maymun bin Hibat Allah' …

Ludvik Kalus Above the mihrab in the prayer hall of the old mosque in Kudus (Northern Central- Java), sealed in the wall, is a unique foundation text, the only one of that period known in the Malay World. This inscription, written in the Arabic language and dated 1549, is scrutinized here in detail for the first time. Through an analysis of the various allusions made to the Prophet David, the «Gnostic» Ja'far al-Sadiq or the historical al-Aqsâ, t…

H./XVI s. E.C)
Claude Guillot In the Kampung Sentana Gedong of Kediri, East- Java, an old Arabie inscription can be seen on a wall of a XVIth century ruined building. The text refers to a certain Near-Eastern imam and shaykh whose name was voluntarily erased and who probably died during the decade 920 H (1514-1523 A.D.). Convinced that such a prominent "islamizator" could not have been ignored by local chronicles, the authors propose an hypothesis to solve the …
