Yupik Spells and the Yupik Language in the Contemporary Religious Ritual Context
It is generally believed that if the languages of indigenous peoples of Siberia are preserved anywhere, it would be within the spheres of traditional environmental management: reindeer husbandry, hunting, fishing, etc. However, among Yupik communities in coastal Chukotka, another domain where the Yupik language remains in use is the religious (ritual) sphere—in particular, in various practices for communicating with the spirits of ancestors. This…
The Formation of Religious Authority Among Central Asian Mullahs in Russia
This paper develops a new approach to contemporary religious authority among Muslim migrants in Russia, conceptualizing such notions as duty and loyalty in the Muslim migration context. The study demonstrates the fluidity of the boundary between official and unofficial authorities using the configuration of the Muslim environment of Irkutsk (Siberia) as its real-life example. The research focuses on the position, religious practices, and views of…

On the Creation of the Multimedia Project "The Memory of a Settlement", Dedicated to the Genealogy, Oral History, and Photographic Archives of Yupik Families from the Settlement of Novoe Chaplino, Chu…
In 2020, I started a project that involved scanning and digitizing the Yupik genealogical charts compiled in Novoe Chaplino (Providensky District, coastal Chukotka) by the ethnographer Mikhail Chlenov in the 1970s and 1980s. He had assembled these materials on the basis of information from local archives and registry offices along with information obtained from communication with the elderly Yupik of Novoe Chaplino, many of whom had been born at …

Possession and exorcism in the Muslim migrant context
This paper is based on fieldwork carried out among Muslim migrants in Moscow. The research focuses on practices of ritual healing and expelling djinn in an urban post-secular environment and in the context of migration. Concerning the procedure of exorcism, both self-reflection and introspection of all the participants of the treatment are of interest to me – the mullah, his patients, their relatives and even critics of these Muslim practices. In…
Spiritual Authority and Religious Introspection among Muslim Migrants in Western Siberia
This article concerns the Islamic community in contemporary Russia and the dynamic identities of Muslim migrants there. The focus of this study is the religious and wider social practices of those Muslim migrants who are considered leaders of local micro-communities, enjoy respect within their religious community, and have steadfast religious authority within their circles. These practices are considered in their local religious and migrant conte…
Locals and immigrants on the Yamal Peninsula. Social boundaries and variations in migratory experience
Western Siberia and the entire Arctic region have been a beacon for migrants from the European part of Russia, from the national republics and the southern regions of Siberia in the post-war era. In contrast with the other regions of Siberia, the oil- and gas-rich North remains a magnet for migration from the entire former Soviet Union to this day. This paper presents research into the contemporary sociocultural environment of Yar-Sale, the admin…

The commemoration of the dead in contemporary Asiatic Yupik ritual space
Contemporary Asiatic Yupik living in Chukotka (Russia) practise various types of ritual feeding of the spirits. People feed the spirits for specific purposes and at different places. The core ritual of feeding the deceased is an autumn commemoration of the dead (aghqesaghtuq), which is described in this article with examples from Novoe Chaplino and Sireniki. This seemingly simple ceremony is full of nuances, and each family practises it in its ow…
