Sirmium and the region of Pannonia Secunda in the sixth and seventh centuries in light of new finds
The fall of Sirmium under the Avars in 582 marks the end of a long process of weakening of imperial power on the Danube border. The Hunnic incursions of the mid-fifth century had left permanent economic and demographic consequences, crucial to the fate of northern possessions. The region of Pannonia Secunda, with the capital Sirmium, became the prey of Germanic populations, Ostrogoths and Gepids. By the beginning of the sixth century, Byzantium c…

The history of the domestic cat in Central Europe
A recent study from Central Europe has changed our perception of the cat's domestication history. The authors discuss how this has led to the development of an interdisciplinary project combining palaeogenetics, zooarchaeology and radiocarbon dating, with the aim of providing insight into the domestic cat's expansion beyond the Mediterranean

The outer forts of Caricin grad: Visualisation of digital terrain models and interpretation
The erection of a new polis, Justiniana Prima, on the site of Caricin Grad, was part of a larger engineering project in a rural hilly setting of the western areas of Dacia Mediterranea, which had also included the construction of nearby fortlets. The article presents LiDAR data which has provided new information related to their ground-plan and dimensions. Located in a 12 km? area around the metropolis, St Elias, Kuliste-Jezero and Gornje Gradist…
New Byzantine seals from Morava (Margum) and Branicevo
The authors present new finds of Byzantine lead seals at Morava (Margum), Branicevo and the broader area around them. The seals from Morava and Branicevo were unearthed in the course of archaeological excavations, which make these finds particularly important. Significant among them is the seal from Morava, which belonged to Symeon (?), magister and logothete of the dromos, from the end of the tenth century, which indicates the presence of Byzant…
Entangled Identities and Otherness in Late Antique and Early Medieval Europe: Historical, Archaeological and Bioarchaeological Approaches: Historical, Archaeological and Bioarchaeological Approaches
Much has been written in recent years about Identities, understood as social, nested or constructing identities; or 'Ethnic Identity', presented as a strategy of distinction and/or identification, as a multidimensional or endogenous ethnicity, or also interpreted as a social construction, social network, negotiated or group identity; and concerning the 'Archaeology of the Identity', including the explicit relation between mortuary practices and S…

Late Roman fortifications in the Leskovac basin in relation to urban Centres
Due to a general insecurity and the need to protect the population and communications, towards the end of the 4th century a large number of Late Roman fortifications were built in the region of the Leskovac basin, mainly towards the edges. Their distribution was determined by the level of the region?s population density, its resources and by the need to control the roads. These were predominantly smaller fortifications whose primary role was the …
The seals in question are: the seals of protonobelissimos Eustathios Kamytzes, Constantine Dalassenos Doukas, protoproedros and doux Constantine Kekaumenos and a certain person called Al…
Early mediaeval hoard of iron objects from Rujkovac and similar finds from the central Balkans
By the village of Rujkovac in southern Serbia, one of the numerous local hillforts is situated. Since it has not been systematically explored, our knowledge of its history leans on an insight into the chance finds. On this occasion, we have opted to depict eight iron objects, probably coming from a damaged hoard. Thanks to four Hungarian-type stirrups which have already been published, the hoard from Rujkovac was dated to the second half of the t…
Application of LiDAR technology in analyses of the topography of Margum/Morava and Kulic
Roman Margum and Mediaeval town of Morava, situated on the Orasje site in Dubravica at the confluence of the Velika Morava and the Danube, could not have been analysed more thoroughly in the past because of the damage caused by the river bed displacements and soil erosion on the one hand, and dense vegetation growing on such a moist terrain on the other. Archaeological research has so far failed to produce even a site plan. Available data on this…
