  • Preliminary results of the wood analyses of the Roman vessels of Caska, island of Pag, Croatia

Open Access•Alba Ferreira Domínguez, Frédéric Guibal et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeonautica•2021

Two assemblages compose the scuttled Roman vessels discovered in Caska inlet (Pag Island, Croatia): three sewn boats (Caska 1, 3 and 4) and one mortise-and-tenon constructed ship (Caska 2). While the wood species used for the construction of the sewn boats are quite similar (beech trunks split radially for planking), the construction of Caska 2 shows greater heterogeneity and more common use of conifer species for planking. The systematic identif…

  • An overview of three decades of dendrochronology applied to ancient Mediterranean shipwrecks in southeastern France

Open Access•Frédéric Guibal, Alba Ferreira Domínguez et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeonautica•2021

Three decades of dendrochronology applied to ancient Mediterranean shipwrecks in southeastern France have resulted in a considerable improvement in knowledge about the wood resources used in ancient shipbuilding. However, in terms of dating, the success rate of dendrochronological analyses is still very low. The possible causes of this low rate are discussed through two case studies: the first pertaining to the shipwrecks from the ancient harbour…

  • A roman barge from the Kupa River at Kamensko, Croatia

Open Access•Giulia Boetto, Anton Divić et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeonautica•2021

The Kamensko barge is a flat-bottomed fluvial vessel dated between the 1st century BC and the 3rd century AD. Its remains lie on the riverbed of the Kupa next to the town of Karlovac in Croatia. Constructed mostly from oak on the principles of bottom- based construction, it is 2 m wide and preserved to a length of 12 m. On its last journey it was transporting a cargo of several hundred bricks. Its interesting structural features suggest a kin- sh…

  • Millennial variability of rates of sea-level rise in the ancient harbour of Naples (Italy, western Mediterranean Sea)

Open Access•Matteo Vacchi, Elda Russo Ermolli et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2020

We reconstructed the late Holocene relative sea-level (RSL) evolution of the ancient harbour of Naples, one of the largest coastal conurbations in the Mediterranean. We carried out multiproxy investigations, coupling archaeological evidence with biological indicators. Our data robustly constrain 2000 yr of non-monotonic changes in sea level, chiefly controlled by the complex volcano-tectonic processes that characterize the area. Between ~200 BC a…

Discovered in 1955, not far from the Roman necropolis of Pedemonte, the Gravellona Toce boat has long been considered evidence of Roman-period riverine navigation in northern Italy. This initial interpretation, which was not supported by direct dating evidence, has been recently reconsidered on the basis of radiocarbon-dating and analysis of the timbers retrieved. In this paper, the authors present the results of the recent analysis of the surviv…
