  • What makes a program good? Evidence from short-cycle higher education programs in five developing countries

  • Dynamic treatment effects of job training

Open Access•Jorge Rodríguez, Fernando Saltiel et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Applied Econometrics•2022

This paper estimates the dynamic returns to job training. We posit a model of sequential training participation, where decisions and outcomes depend on observed and unobserved characteristics. We analyze different treatment effects, including policy relevant parameters, and link them to continuation values and latent skills. The empirical analysis exploits administrative data combining job training records, matched employee‐employer information, …

  • Protestar y peregrinar en Santiago de Chile. El caso de la animita de Mauricio Fredes durante la revuelta chilena

    Open Access•Sergio Urzúa-Martínez, Macarena González Franzani•ARTICLE•Revista de Estudios Sociales•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 8

Animitas are artifacts of a popular religious practice present in Chile and other parts of the Andean world. They are built where someone meets death, far from home and the company of their loved ones. They are generally associated with tragic, bloody or violent deaths, as happened in Santiago de Chile during the social revolt with Mauricio Fredes, a young demonstrator who died in the center of the capital as a result of police repression. The an…

  • Does an Increasing Minimum Wage Reduce Formal Sector Employment? Evidence from Brazil

Fernando Saltiel, Sergio Urzúa et al.•ARTICLE•Economic Development and Cultural…•2022•References: 39

Between 2003 and 2012, Brazil’s real minimum wage increased by 62%. In this paper, we take advantage of matched employer-employee data and examine whether this increase resulted in negative impacts in the formal labor market. The empirical analysis is carried out at the local level. Our main identification strategy relies on geographical variation in the incidence of the minimum wage. We first document substantial heterogeneity in the incidence b…

    Open Access•Sergio Urzúa-Martínez•ARTICLE•Varia Historia•2021

  • Education, Birth Order and Family Size

    Open Access•Jesper Bagger, Javier A Birchenall et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2020•Cited by: 1

This article introduces a framework to study parental investments in the presence of birth order preferences and/or human capital cost differentials across children. The framework yields canonical models as special cases and delivers sharp testable predictions concerning how parental investments respond to an exogenous change in family size in the presence of birth order effects. These predictions characterize a generalised quantity–quality trade…

  • Estructura Interna e Invarianza Métrica de la Escala de Autoeficacia Académica Ases

Open Access•Carlos Calderón Carvajal, Beatriz Carreño Mendoza et al.•ARTICLE•Salud & Sociedad•2019

AIM: The study presents the results of the adaptation of an academic self-efficacy scale. Specifically, the purpose of the study was to analyse the internal structure of the translation and adaptation of the ASES scale by Chemers, Hu y García (2001). METHOD: 4950 Chilean university students participated. Additionally, to study the Equivalence/Invariance of Measurement between different groups of students, we have performed a factorial invariance …

  • Aportes a una etnografía de los movimientos feministas: Recursos expresivos en las marchas #Ni una menos y #8M en Santiago de Chile

    Open Access•Sergio Urzúa-Martínez, Sergio Urzúa Martínez•ARTICLE•Antípoda Revista de Antropología…•2019•Cited by: 5•References: 2

The #Ni una menos and #8M marches were central to the Chilean feminist movement’s accumulation of power. In them, a wide repertoire of expressive resources was used aimed at building audiences and publicize the meaning of the denouncements. Based on fieldwork involving observation and photographic records of these political demonstrations (held in Santiago de Chile in 2017 and 2018), this work provides a description of the resources used, and a r…

  • Huelga de Hambre: Dolor, Sufrimiento y Visibilización del Conflicto Social

    Sergio Urzúa, Sergio Urzúa-Martínez•ARTICLE•Revista Sociedad y Equidad•2012

This paper is a theoretical reflection about the hunger strike conducted by Chilean students under the student movement of 2011. In this context, the hunger strike, was established as a tool to visibilize the suffering and denaturalize the repression through a sacrificial act where the bodies are exposed to pain. It is precisely this exhibition that allows dominated sectors to break into the public space, dispute their hegemony and achieve social…

  • The Education-Health Gradient

    G Conti, James J Heckman et al.•ARTICLE•American Economic Review•2010

In this paper, we determine the role played by early cognitive, noncognitive, and health endowments. We identify the causal effect of education on health and health-related behaviors. We develop an empirical model of schooling choice and post-schooling outcomes, where both schooling and the outcomes determined in part by schooling are influenced by measured early family environments and latent capabilities (cognitive, noncognitive and health). We…

  • The Effects of Cognitive and Noncognitive Abilities on Labor Market Outcomes and Social Behavior

James J Heckman, Jora Stixrud et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Labor Economics•2006

This paper established that a low dimensional vector of cognitive and noncognitive skills explains a variety of labor market and behavioral outcomes. For many dimensions of social performance cognitive and noncognitive skills are equally important. Our analysis addresses the problems of measurement error, imperfect proxies, and reverse causality that plague conventional studies of cognitive and noncognitive skills that regress earnings (and other…

  • Understanding Instrumental Variables in Models with Essential Heterogeneity

James J Heckman, Sergio Urzúa et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2006

This paper examines the properties of instrumental variables (IV) applied to models with essential heterogeneity, that is, models where responses to interventions are heterogeneous and agents adopt treatments (participate in programs) with at least partial knowledge of their idiosyncratic response. We analyze two-outcome and multiple-outcome models, including ordered and unordered choice models. We allow for transition-specific and general instru…
