  • Contested Grounds: Farmer Protests, Political Imaginaries, and Environmental Futures in Rural Spain

    Eva-Lynn Jagoe, Marta Rocatín Centelles•ARTICLE•Environmental Communication•2026•References: 8

In Europe, farmers now make up just 4% of the population, yet their protests have commanded outsized political and media attention. This paper analyzes the symbolic and political significance of the farmer figure in contemporary Spain, where agrarian life is increasingly mobilized in struggles over national identity, rural decline, environmental stewardship, and energy transition. Through close readings of two 2022 Spanish films – As Bestas (dir.…

  • The Tangled Roots of Family, Forest, and Farm

    Open Access•Eva-Lynn Jagoe•ARTICLE•Journal of Ecohumanism•2023

When my family started stewarding eight acres in British Columbia, Canada, we encountered a pervasive pioneer species or “weed”—quackgrass—that grows long roots and chokes out other plants. This paper counterposes the behaviour of these competitive and embinding roots with the cooperative mutual interrelation of forest root systems. Using these two roots as metaphors for the pleasures and pitfalls of family, I will make an argument for family far…

  • The Use and Abuse of Compost

    Eva-Lynn Jagoe•ARTICLE•Comparative Literature Studies•2023

Food and bodies die and decompose in ways that can contribute to a cycle of regeneration through compost. Late modernity functions as a discard culture, however, and this process of life and death is often broken or interrupted. This article analyzes the reappearance of compost as a solution to waste in the language of entrepreneurs, scientists, and scholars who assert their relationship to it. In these discourses, the multiple species that perfo…

  • Solar Goop

    Eva-Lynn Jagoe•ARTICLE•South Atlantic Quarterly•2021•References: 2

Would we know solarity if we encountered it? And where do we look for the potential openings that such a new energy system could enable? Georges Bataille's The Accursed Share has emerged as a key text in the theorization of energy because of his distinction between the restricted economy of capitalism versus a general economy most clearly figured by the energetic exuberance and abundance of the sun. This article makes use of Bataille's deliberate…

  • Buenos aires and the aesthetics of defamiliarization

  • Patagonian Peripheries

    Eva-Lynn Alicia Jagoe, Eva-Lynn Jagoe•ARTICLE•Studies in Travel Writing•2003

In the late nineteenth century, Perito Moreno, deeply influenced by Charles Darwin, constructs Patagonia and its inhabitants as peripheral to civilisation, yet also integral to an understanding of the past and of the self in the present. Awed by the vastness of geological time that Patagonia's landscape evidences, he is all the more startled when faced with the existence of indigenous peoples who put into question his own Darwinian views of the e…
