Counter-Movement, Space and Politics
'What is the contemporary?' Reflecting on this question Agamben argues that one who is contemporary should actively perceive 'the darkness of his time as something that concerns him, as something that never ceases to engage him [sic]' (Agamben, 2009, p.45). The protests that started in late May 2013 in Turkey, now referred to as the Gezi Resistance produced a radical conception of contemporaneity in this respect, as opposed to the concept of cont…

This article focuses on a particular monument in Tophane, the Workers' Monument, which has been subjected to destructions ever since the time it was put in place in 1973 and which still stands in the same place as a crippled and unidentifiable body. Gender and National Fantasy
Women figure centrally in representations of modernity and of nations. This has caught the attention of researchers both in the West and in the context of “Third World” nationalisms. Yuval-Davis states: ”[I]t is women –not just (?) the bureaucracy and intelligentsia—who reproduce nations, biologically, culturally and symbolically” (1997, p. 2). However, an analysis of “women” as the subjects of the nation differs from a perspective that dwells on…
