  • Sequences in harmony: Cognitive interactions between musical and visual narrative structure

    Open Access•Morgan Patrick, Morgan T Patrick et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Psychologica•2023

From film and television to graphic storytelling, tonal music can accompany visual narratives in a variety of contexts. The apprehension of both musical and narrative sequences involves temporal categories in ordered patterning, which raises an interesting question: Do musical progressions and visual narratives rely on shared sequence processing mechanisms? If this is the case, then cues from music and sequential static images, when presented sim…

  • Auditory Word Recognition: Evidence from Aphasia and Functional Neuroimaging

    Open Access•Sheila E Blumstein•ARTICLE•Language and Linguistics Compass•2009

This review examines the neural systems underlying auditory word recognition processes using both lesion and functional neuroimaging studies. Focus is on the influence of the sound properties of language (its phonetic and its phonological properties) in the service of identifying a particular word or the conceptual/meaning associated with that word. Results indicate that auditory word recognition recruits a neural system in which information is p…

  • Invariant cues for place of articulation in stop consonants

    K N Stevens, Κ Ν Stevens et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of the Acoustical…•1978

In a series of experiments, identification responses for place of articulation were obtained for synthetic stop consonants in consonant–vowel syllables with different vowels. The acoustic attributes of the consonants were systematically manipulated, the selection of stimulus characteristics being guided in part by theoretical considerations concerning the expected properties of the sound generated in the vocal tract as place of articulation is va…
