  • A new insight into the sheathing of early 19th-century French warships

    Open Access•Sébastien Berthaut-Clarac, Nicolás C Ciarlo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2026

Materials characterisation has largely been applied to the study of modern shipwrecks, providing valuable data for dating, provenance, and technological assessment. The comparison between vessels from the same period and origin, however, is less common. A comparative approach based on fine-grained data retrieved from intra-fleet warships, for instance, can help to identify their service histories and detect short-term technological or supply-rela…

  • Assessment of consolidants for the preservation of Tituli Picti on amphorae from the Ses Fontanelles late Roman shipwreck (Mallorca, Spain)

Open Access•Elisa Fernández Tudela, Rafael Zarzuela et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Heritage•2025•References: 1

  • New remarks on the mid-17th-century gunfounding in Northern Europe

    Open Access•Nicolás C Ciarlo, Josefa Martí Solano et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 24

This article deals with the study of an assemblage of scrap bronze guns recovered from the Delta III site, identified as a Dutch merchant ship lost in the port of Cadiz, Spain, about the third quarter of the seventeenth century. This kind of remains is seldom preserved and therefore stands as a unique source for addressing modern bronze gunfounding. Its main characteristics and drawbacks were outlined and discussed on historical and archaeologica…

  • Documentación y análisis de un cepo de ancla romano y sus elementos iconográficos y epigráficos sellados

Open Access•Elisa Fernández Tudela, Luis C Zambrano et al.•ARTICLE•Virtual Archaeology Review•2022

This paper aims to present the documentation and analysis methodology carried out on a lead trap from the ancient period, which belongs to the collection of traps in the Museum of Cádiz (Andalusia, Spain). The anchor stock had some interesting characteristics for this research. On the one hand, from the point of view of conservation and restoration, due to the alterations it presented. On the other hand, from a historical and archaeological point…

  • Evolution of a Shallow Water Wave‐Dominated Shipwreck Site

    Open Access•Tomás Fernández-Montblanc, T Fernández‐Montblanc et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2016•Cited by: 6•References: 4

The evolution of the shallow water wave‐dominated Fougueux wreck site in the Gulf of Cadiz was investigated through repeat bathymetric surveys, wave‐ and current‐velocity field measurements, and numerical modeling. This multidisciplinary approach was used to understand the relationships between scouring, morphodynamic change, and hydrodynamic forcing. Field experiments and numerical models indicate that wave processes dominate site evolution. Num…

  • Characterization of a Historical Cannonball from the Fortress of San Juan De Ulúa Exposed to a Marine Environment

    Open Access•Magali Hernández, Marco Hernández-Escampa et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2016•References: 15

Metallurgical analyses and chemical characterizations were carried out on historical cannonballs from the Fortress of San Juan de Ulúa, Veracruz, México. Cannonballs dating from the 18th and 19th centuries share metallurgical characteristics similar to those of material coming from a shipment of ammunition found in the wreck of a sunken French ship from the battle of Trafalgar. The analyses show that the base material is grey cast iron with a car…

  • Scattered shipwreck site prospection

    Open Access•Tomás Fernández-Montblanc, Alfredo Izquierdo et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2016•Cited by: 5•References: 28
