  • Lexicalized Verbs in Paraguayan Guarani and Other Tupi-Guarani Languages

Martín Califa, Estefanía Baranger•ARTICLE•International Journal of American…•2026

In this paper we provide a diachronic characterization of two lexicalization processes in Paraguayan Guarani and their extension across the Tupi-Guarani family involving two prefixes: the middle je‐/ñe‐ and the Old Guarani third person patient index jo‐/ño‐. In both cases lexical semantics explains the distribution of the prefixes in the different verbs. While an animacy constraint underlies jo‐/ño‐ lexicalization, middle situation types are key …

Esca…

  • On Syntactic Integration and Semantico-Pragmatic Distribution of Mbya Guarani Purpose Coding Strategies

    Open Access•Estefanía Baranger•ARTICLE•Languages•2022•References: 18

The aim of this paper is to describe the available strategies for coding purpose relations in Mbya, focusing on their semantico-pragmatic distribution. According to Dooley, Mbya Guarani presents two main different strategies involved in the coding of purpose relations: aguã nominalizations and vy-dependent clauses, and among the latter a motion-cum-purpose (MCP) construction subtype is included. These strategies differ in regard to the semantic c…

  • La Interfaz Sintaxis-Pragmática. Estudios teóricos, descriptivos y experimentales

  • Object Sharing in Mbya Guarani

    Open Access•Marcia Damaso Vieira, Estefanía Baranger•ARTICLE•Languages•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 12

In this paper, we intend to describe and discuss the grammatical status of the V1-V2 (Cy/vy) constructions found in Mbya Guarani which can express simultaneous events, among other meanings, and which involve a single clause. We suggest here that this verbal complex can be treated as a case of asymmetrical verbal serialization because it contains verbs from a major lexical class, occupying the V1 slot, followed by a more restricted intransitive ve…
