  • Public Opinion and China's Strategic Communication: Responses to Coercion and Persuasion

    Open Access•G A Davies, Kingsley Edney et al.•ARTICLE•Foreign Policy Analysis•2025•References: 38

How publics respond to foreign state communications is an important yet relatively unexplored aspect of public diplomacy. In this article we examine the effectiveness of foreign state influence strategies, examining how messaging affects public attitudes to a specific policy issue—in this case, whether China should be permitted to invest in nuclear power infrastructure in the United Kingdom. Deriving a range of arguments from official Chinese new…

  • Public attitudes to China in the ‘Five Eyes: Unpacking views across the Anglosphere security community

    Open Access•Kingsley Edney, Richard Q Turcsányi et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Journal Of International…•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 5

China is an important security concern for the United States and its allies, including the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing group that is sometimes described as the core of the ‘Anglosphere’ security community. While we would expect securitising discourses at the elite level to reproduce some common perceptions of China, to what extent are attitudes to China shared across the publics in these countries? In this article, we unpack public attitudes t…

  • Modelling Chinese Youth Support for Military Intervention in the Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands: Beyond Nationalism and Militarism

    Open Access•G A Davies, Kingsley Edney et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Conflict Resolution•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 19

Research on public opinion and foreign policy in China has focused on nationalism as the driver behind public support for the use of force. However, nationalism is just one of many potentially significant factors that can increase support for military deployments. In this article we build a mediation model to test the relative effects of psychological predispositions, foreign policy attitudes, perceptions of the opposing state and calculations ab…

  • National images, trust and international friendship: Evidence from Chinese students

    Open Access•G A Davies, Kingsley Edney et al.•ARTICLE•International Relations•2021

This article uses a new dataset of Chinese student attitudes to foreign affairs to analyse how perceptions of the United States, Russia, Japan and North and South Korea affect respondent perceptions of international friendship with these states. Employing a mediation analysis we find that perceptions of national trustworthiness above all other images is the crucial factor in explaining cross-national friendship. These findings suggest that trust-…

  • Environmental Pollution and the Media: Political Discourses of Risk and Responsibility in Australia, China and Japan

Glenn D Hook, Libby Lester et al.•BOOK•Environmental Pollution and the…•2017

Chapter Three AustraliaAustralia is the first of our case studies. In one way at least, Australia represents the beginning of our transnational pollution story--even if the phenomena we are exploring in this book are best viewed as a circular flow of political communications, goods and environmental harms in which all three countries in this study are caught. Each country is affected by the massive quantities of pollutants emitted daily into the wo…

  • Building National Cohesion and Domestic Legitimacy: A Regime Security Approach to Soft Power in China

    Open Access•Kingsley Edney•ARTICLE•Politics•2015•Cited by: 29•References: 27

Studies of Chinese soft power have emphasized its potential to ameliorate the security dilemma and help China achieve a ‘peaceful rise’. While this perspective is useful, it overlooks an important alternative Chinese interpretation of soft power as a response to domestic security challenges. In order to address this omission, this article uses a regime security approach to examine soft power in the Chinese context. Through an investigation of the…

  • Propaganda in Chinese Domestic Politics

    Open Access•Kingsley Edney•CHAPTER•Globalization of Chinese Propaganda•2014

Propaganda practices involve the Party-state exercising power in order to affect how discourses are publicly articulated. The Party-state uses propaganda practices to reproduce its official narrative about key political concepts and issues as well as to suppress any rival narratives that threaten to undermine the shared meanings that legitimize CCP rule. This is intended to prevent the emergence of a coherent alternative political project that co…

  • Conclusion

    Open Access•Kingsley Edney•CHAPTER•Globalization of Chinese Propaganda•2014

The use of propaganda practices is deeply embedded in the Chinese political system and is a key aspect of how the Party-state exercises power in contemporary domestic politics. In one sense this is visible in the way that the political bodies linked to the central propaganda authorities form a vast network of institutions that operate at all levels of the political system, from the elite central leadership down to the level of village and neighbo…

  • China’s Foreign Propaganda Practices

    Open Access•Kingsley Edney•CHAPTER•Globalization of Chinese Propaganda•2014

The power of Party-state propaganda practices is not confined to the domestic political sphere. The Party-state also uses propaganda practices in its relations with those outside its own sovereign territory. This chapter examines the propaganda practices the Party-state uses internationally, beginning with an explanation of the role that such practices play in the broader context of the Party-state’s attempts to exercise power in the world. The s…

  • Conceptual Interaction: Soft Power and Cultural Cohesion

    Open Access•Kingsley Edney•CHAPTER•Globalization of Chinese Propaganda•2014

The way the Party-state conceptualizes propaganda practices shapes its understanding of the purpose of such practices. The Party-state’s broad goals in relation to propaganda practices in turn drive its propaganda strategy and the use of those practices. This chapter investigates how the Party-state conceptualizes propaganda practices and the relationship between those practices at the domestic and international levels by focusing on the concept …

  • Strategic Interaction: Global Times and the Main Melody

    Open Access•Kingsley Edney•CHAPTER•Globalization of Chinese Propaganda•2014

Propaganda strategy is the Party-state’s broad, long-term approach to propaganda. Propaganda strategy is used by the Party-state to maintain its ability to exercise power through propaganda practices in response to changes in the context in which that exercise of power takes place. The environment in which discourse is publicly articulated in China has undergone a dramatic transformation since the beginning of the period of reform and opening. Al…

  • Propaganda, Power, and Cohesion in Chinese Politics

    Open Access•Kingsley Edney•CHAPTER•Globalization of Chinese Propaganda•2014

What role does propaganda play in the Chinese political system? What is the relationship between power and propaganda? How should we begin to think about the influence of domestic propaganda on China’s engagement with discourses beyond its borders? This chapter attempts to address these questions in order to provide a general foundation on which further investigation and analysis can be built. The first section briefly explains the contemporary d…

  • Tactical Interaction: Public Opinion Crises and the Official Truth

    Open Access•Kingsley Edney•CHAPTER•Globalization of Chinese Propaganda•2014

The Party-state’s use of propaganda practices to exercise power becomes the most concrete and comes into the sharpest focus when there is a public opinion crisis. In a crisis scenario information spreads quickly and the potential for public emotions to manifest in the form of protests or other political action is higher than usual. Party-state propaganda authorities are forced to make urgent decisions about how to deal with narratives that challe…

  • China and the blunt temptations of geo-engineering: The role of solar radiation management in China's strategic response to climate change

    Kingsley Edney, Jonathan Symons•ARTICLE•The Pacific Review•2013•Cited by: 7•References: 1

Amid growing alarm over the rising atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases, increasing attention is being given to ‘geo-engineering’ technologies that could counteract some of the impacts of global warming by either reducing absorption of solar energy (solar radiation management (SRM)) or removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Geo-engineering has the potential to dramatically alter the dynamics of global climate change negotiations be…

  • Soft Power and the Chinese Propaganda System

    Kingsley Edney•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary China•2012•Cited by: 24

Chinese party-state officials now openly speak of the importance of increasing the country's soft power. This raises questions, however, about how the soft power concept relates to the party-state's existing propaganda system. This article investigates how the party-state interprets the soft power concept and how this fits into its broader approach to propaganda work. It argues that the way the party-state has interpreted the concept of soft powe…

  • Howard's way? Public opinion as an influence on Australia's engagement with Asia, 1996–2007

Derek Mcdougall, Kingsley Edney•ARTICLE•Australian Journal Of International…•2010•Cited by: 3•References: 10

Using the typology developed by Douglas Foyle, this article argues that John Howard behaved as a ‘pragmatist’ in dealing with situations where public opinion was relevant to Australia's engagement with Asia. Howard adhered to his own views on the relevant issues while attempting to lead public opinion in the direction he believed desirable. During the 1996–2007 period the most relevant issues relating to the impact of public opinion on Australia'…
