  • Spatial Distributions of Isotope Ratios in Tap Water, Hair, and Teeth from Latin America for Region-of- Origin Predictions of Unidentified Border Crossers

Saskia Ammer, Eric J Bartelink et al.•ARTICLE•Forensic Anthropology•2025

In this article, we present and summarize reference stable isotope data useful in the identification efforts of deceased undocumented border crossers (UBCs) found in southern Arizona and South Texas. In addition, we discuss the use of reference baseline data to refine predictions of region-of-origin of unidentified UBC remains. Overall, Mexican reference hair samples reflect significant consumption of C4 resources, indicating a diet dominated by …

  • Crossing Borders

Eric J Bartelink, Eric Bartelink et al.•ARTICLE•Forensic Anthropology•2025

This special issue of Forensic Anthropology focuses on applications of stable isotope analysis in forensic anthropologyand originated from a 2020 American Academy of Forensic Sciences symposium titled "Crossing Borders: International and Multidisciplinary Applications of Isotope Analysis in Forensic Anthropology." Stable isotope applications are still relatively new in forensic anthropology, and current applications focus on the provenancing (i.e…

  • Childhood and Adulthood Residency Prediction Using Strontium (87Sr/86Sr) and Oxygen (δ18O) Isotopes for Unidentified Deceased Migrants Recovered in Southern Texas

Robyn Kramer, Robyn T Kramer et al.•ARTICLE•Forensic Anthropology•2022

Strontium and oxygen isotope values are used in conjunction with a maximum likelihood assignment model to predict the childhood and adulthood geographic residences of 20 deceased migrants recovered along the México-U.S. border in south Texas. The objectives of this research are to determine (1) if the childhood and adulthood residency assignments predict the same geographic region, (2) if using the predicted residential history/nationality as a f…

  • Using Real Interpretative Differences to Assess Inter-laboratory Isotopic Variability Due to Sample Preparation

Amelia Edwards, Lesley Chesson et al.•ARTICLE•Forensic Anthropology•2022•Citada por: 1

Here we present a two-part study to assess isotope data comparability between two sample preparation laboratories, based on the concept of Real Interpretative Differences (RID). Inter-laboratory isotopic variability should be evaluated prior to compiling data from different sources. Isotopic variability can result from two main causes: sample preparation and sample analysis. We compared the carbon and nitrogen isotope delta (δ) values of 20 moder…

  • Root of the Problem

    Open Access•Laura E Cirillo, Laura Cirillo et al.•ARTICLE•Dental Anthropology Journal•2022•Referências: 3

Previous bioarchaeological analysis of postmortem tooth loss (PMTL) has failed to recognize the potential influence of diseased dental tissue on tooth retention after death. Because tooth loss from a traditional taphonomy prospective is treated simply as missing data, demographic studies are potentially influenced by underestimations of disease prevalence. To investigate the association of tooth loss and dental disease, tissue health data was col…

  • American Board of Forensic Anthropology's Certification Program

Donna C Boyd, Donna Boyd et al.•ARTICLE•Forensic Anthropology•2020•Citada por: 3

Certification through the American Board of Forensic Anthropology (ABFA) provides forensic anthropologists with accredited validation of the highest level of qualifications (including education and training) and professionalism in the discipline, through rigorous vetting of an applicant's casework, knowledge, and skill. It encourages adherence to best practice methodological and ethical standards and provides a system of recognition of qualified …

  • The American Board of Forensic Anthropology Turns 40

Eric J Bartelink, Eric Bartelink et al.•ARTICLE•Forensic Anthropology•2020•Citada por: 1

The professionalization of forensic anthropology in North America began with the establishment of the Physical Anthropology section (now Anthropology Section) of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS) in 1972 and the development of the American Board of Forensic Anthropology (ABFA) board certification program in 1977-78. This review first outlines the history of ABFA board certification, then discusses temporal trends among ABFA diploma…
