  • Samepolitikkens plass i utviklingsprosesseri nord

  • Northwest Russian Fisheries After the Disintegration of the USSR

Sveinung Eikeland, Larissa Ryabova et al.•ARTICLE•Polar Geography•2005

After the early 1990s the position of the Northwest Russian fisheries in the global system of fisheries changed completely. Although the Soviet Union had established a Northern fisheries system based on global harvesting and deliveries to Russian regional "markets," the new Northwest Russian system is based on catches in regional waters and access to global fish markets. In the same period, Northern fisheries units that formerly functioned as pow…

  • Transition in a Cold Climate

    Open Access•Sveinung Eikeland, Larissa Riabova•ARTICLE•Sociologia Ruralis•2002

This paper examines why and how the development of the forestry and fishery sectors in Northwest Russia have taken very different trajectories during the transition period and examines the impacts of these trajectories on the rural areas concerned. The drive to establish natural resources as "resources" in an economic sense during the transition period acts as the starting point for the analysis. However, the success of this drive has depended on…

  • New Rural Pluriactivity? Household Strategies and Rural Renewal in Norway

    Open Access•Sveinung Eikeland•ARTICLE•Sociologia Ruralis•1999•Cited by: 9

It is a common assumption that pluriactive Nordic smallholders would prefer an income from ordinary paid work to the daily search for income. However, this article shows that a large proportion of pluriactive people live in regions with considerable access to paid work. The question therefore becomes why they choose traditional rural adaptations when there is ample opportunity to obtain ordinary full-time paid work. The analysis is based on data …
