The evolutionary resilience perspective’s focus on ‘persistent resilience’ gives theoretical support for this research. This view brings to the forefront everyday encountering places and related…

This article examines landscape stewardship from the perspective of landscape biography and focuses on different outcomes on how individual and collective stewardship connected to local place attachment and historic understandings are leveraged as local knowledge in sustaining locally important landscapes. Drawing on the personal-existential landscape identity for local planning policy: Reflections from three rural areas in Estonia

While the term ‘landscape’ consistently appears in the argumentation of planetary urbanization, it remains an under-conceptualized signifier in this theory. This is a missed opportunity. Written by scholars who study landscape, this paper scrutinizes the planetary urbanization approach by adding the ‘landscape perspective’. The article offers an analytical framework and tools to unpack contemporary processes of extended urbanization in a more nua…

Chronotope as a framework for landscape experience analysis
The paper explores the analysability of landscape experience and the interpretation enabled by the concept of the chronotope. Beyond its potential for a holistic study of texts, the chronotope can also be applied in landscape studies. In geography, the chronotope has primarily been used for analysis within three different areas: discourses and narratives, spatiotemporal sense of everyday places and biological spaces. Our aim is to show the applic…

Visual meaning-making in an underprivileged neighbourhood landscape: Milieus and atmospheres
By bringing together the spatially oriented ‘milieu’ and ‘atmosphere’ approach with the method of self-generated photo elicitation, this visual essay examines the possibility of the mediation of new meanings in urban neighbourhood representation and spatial organization. The milieu/atmosphere relationship offers a methodological background for visual communication in landscape, where, besides common and conscious interpretations, expression is gi…
