Rare Diseases as Epistemic Objects: Exploring the Moral Role of Health Systems
This article explores how rare diseases reveal the moral and epistemic foundations of healthcare systems. Based on narrative interviews with 11 Chilean patients and 10 professionals, this study shows how the absence of standardised protocols—such as clinical guidelines, treatment pathways and referral standards—exposes informal, discretionary and morally complex decision‐making processes. Contrary to the ideal of evidence‐based care, rare disease…
A social determination framework for mental health
BACKGROUND: Mainstream global mental health continues to privilege individual-level risk factors and biomedical approaches and treatments while sidelining the structural forces that shape mental distress. Despite calls for more socially embedded and decolonial approaches, policy and research too often neglect how structural phenomena such as globalization, colonialism, and neoliberal reforms directly drive mental health inequities. MAIN BODY: Dra…
Beyond Care: Plural Ethics in Fractured Urban Worlds
Living together and apart: Reimagining care in a segregated neighbourhood of Santiago, Chile
Based on an ethnography with children and families in a segregated neighbourhood of Santiago, Chile, this article explores how care is practiced amid urban violence and inequality. Through a combination of drawing and walking methods, it examines how children and parents negotiate risk, absence, and structural neglect in their efforts to sustain relational life. In dialogue with Science and Technology Studies, it shows how care emerges through fr…
Noticing, Caring, and Hauntings: Environmental Practices and the Struggle for Alternative Futures
This article explores environmental care practices and individuals' relationships with their surroundings in Chile, emphasizing how the unequal burden of care, particularly among women, shapes responses to the climate crisis. Drawing on Science and Technology Studies and Posthumanist thinking, we advocate for cultivating the art of noticing – developing affective and ethical attunements with the environment that inspire novel care practices. Howe…
Spectralities of ADHD: Hauntological Diagnosis Amidst Agency, Politics and Pedagogies
Hauntology has become an increasingly alluring concept in social sciences to reflect upon everyday life and how subjects dwell upon scenarios pervaded not only by the potency of the actual but also the haunting of the past and the virtual. Drawing on the concept of 'hauntology', we inquire about recurring temporalities and spectrality themes concerning the 'controversial' diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in Chile. Usin…
Silenced Conflict: Surveillance and Normalization Using WhatsApp Groups at School
Care entanglements: Upholding difference through the uses of mental health diagnosis in Chilean schools
This article draws upon findings from fieldwork conducted with Chilean mental health practitioners and school staff to explore how children's mental health diagnoses can be used in the school setting as a particular rationale to mobilise and convey new forms of care practices (Mol, The logic of care: Health and the problem of patient choice, 2008). Inspired by the framing of care as an interrelational, interdependent and more-than-human affair pr…
Care during exceptional times: Results of the Cuidar study on the Covid-19 pandemic in Chile
This article presents some results of “CUIDAR; study on times, forms, and spaces of care at home during the pandemic,” a research project that explored how the pandemic and the subsequent policies implemented by the Chilean government transformed and disrupted the spatialities, temporalities, and practices of care within the households. To do so, we designed a web survey that draws inspiration from care theories emerging from the field of Science…

How to diagnose a child? Atention Deficit-Hiperactivity Disorder diagnostic strategies from a critical discursive perspective
This work examines from the perspective of critical discourse analysis, the Attention Deficit with Hyperactivity Disorder diagnosis as stated by the DSM–IV and ICD-10. It considers as basis the difficulties posed by medical taxonomy of childhood as a distinct social category from adulthood, the using the sign of hyperkinesia as an evidence of the disorder, and the utilization of auxiliary instruments, external to the clinical “setting”, as the “T…
