When URLs on social networks become invisible: Bias and social media logics in a cross-platform hyperlink study
Extant research has addressed various concerns of representativeness in digital social research including: bias in researchers’ selection of online spaces, foci on single-platform approaches, and limited or skewed samples due to API (application programming interface) restrictions. This paper adds to that work through an illustration of tool bias towards specific social media logics (e.g., Twitter logics) in a URL-based network across/within soci…
Data Durabilities: Towards Conceptualizations of Scientific Long-Term Data Storage
With the increased requirement for open data and data reuse in the sciences the call for long-term data storage becomes stronger. However, long-term data storage is insufficiently theorized and often considered as simply short-term data that are stored longer. Interviews with scientists at a German university show that data are not in themselves durable; they are made durable. While Science & Technology Studies data research has emphasized the re…
Comparable Worth: Is It a Worthy Policy?
For decades women working as nurses, librarians, and secretaries have argued that they are paid less than men in jobs requiring comparable skill and effort. By the late 1980s, the notion of "comparable worth" had become a familiar one, and comparable worth initiatives were being developed to counteract the persistent disparities between male and female pay. In a comprehensive assessment of this policy, Elaine Sorensen lays out the various approac…
Phenomenon-driven research and systematic research assembling: Methodological conceptualisations for psychology’s epistemic projects
This article contributes to psychology’s epistemic project by proposing a methodology that foregrounds the relation between research methods and subject matter. Considering method-driven and subject-driven approaches as being opposite poles of a continuum, the science of psychology has historically tended toward emphasising one or the other. Method-driven approaches claim legitimacy through an emphasis on a unifying standardised method, while sub…
Psychology’s epistemic projects
What are the epistemic projects of psychology? What insights does psychology seek to produce, and what kinds of knowledge are adequate for the psychological challenges of contemporary worlds? These are the fundamental questions we address in this special issue. Dating back more than a century, psychology emerged as a discipline in a specific context with specific challenges and tasks. Since then, societies, humans, and the world have changed, and…

The mind and distributed cognition: The place of knowing in a maths class
A standing dispute in theories of cognition concerns whether cognition unfolds as mental processing of representations or as distributed cognition, as social and non-representational. The disagreement can be seen as a dispute about the spatial location of knowing: does knowing take place in the mind or brain, or is it situated in social practice? I argue that approaches to distributed cognition overreact when rejecting that cognition is isolated …

Science and Technology Studies: Eine sozialanthropologische Einführung
Violent computer games in the German press
The most heated public debates on the subject of violent computer games in Germany take place following incidents of school shootings. Such reactions are often conceptualized as moral panics and signs of underlying social conflict. Focus is rarely on the violent computer games themselves. Actor-network theory allows for an analysis of how phenomena are sequentially drawn together, contingent upon the material available for the press at specific t…
Circulation of Authorisations in the Classroom: A Socio-Material Process
Authority in educational settings is generally taken to belong to the teacher—to reside inside a human. At the same time, the use of new technology in schools is said to challenge authority. How is authority produced and maintained in classrooms not just through engagement among humans, but also through engagements between humans and non-human elements? In a computer-enhanced primary school classroom where the construction-based learning platform…

Declining employment among young black less-educated men: The role of incarceration and child support
In this paper, we explore the continuing decline in employment and labor force participation of nonenrolled Black men between the ages of 16 and 34 who have a high school education or less in the 1980s and 1990s. We focus on two fairly new developments: (1) the dramatic growth in the number of young Black men who have been incarcerated and (2) strengthened enforcement of child support policies. We analyze micro-level data from the Current Populat…
Father Involvement with Their Nonmarital Children: Patterns, Determinants, and Effects on Their Earnings
The expanding consensus about the advantages of two-parent families, together with the rising number of children growing up without the presence of both parents, has stimulated policy-makers to look for ways of increasing fathers' involvement. This paper examines two sets of questions relevant to these policy initiatives. The first concerns the patterns of involvement between fathers and children born outside of marriage. The paper defines father…
Getting to Know Poor Fathers Who Do Not Pay Child Support
About 2.5 million nonresident fathers are poor and do not pay child support. Most of them face multiple employment barriers, just like poor custodial mothers, but are significantly less likely than those mothers to participate in work‐support programs such as training, education, job search activities, or income security programs. Without access to work‐support programs, these fathers will remain unable to provide the financial support that their…
A National Profile of Nonresident Fathers and Their Ability to Pay Child Support
This study provides the first national estimates of nonresident fathers' income and child support payments as reported by nonresident fathers, themselves, in two nationally representative surveys. According to these data, nonresident fathers could pay as much as $34 billion more in child support if all nonresident fathers had child support orders and if those orders were fully paid. This figure has been cited extensively by President Bill Clinton…
What explains the continuing decline in labor force activity among young black men?1
In this paper we show that employment rates among less-educated young black men in the US continued their long secular decline in the 1980s and 1990s. We review a range of potential causes of this problem, including weak schooling, persistent discrimination, declining real wages and the disappearance of blue-collar jobs. For the 1990s, we also focus on two fairly new developments: the dramatic rise in the numbers of young black men with criminal …

Multi-Sited Comparison of 'Doing Regulation
George Marcus (1995) emphasizes that multi-sited ethnography embodies within itself a comparative dimension. For our general understanding of comparison, however, multi-sited ethnography lacks a crucial component: a grounding or tertium comparationis. This article proposes a multi-sited comparison which does not take as its point of departure any tertium comparationis but instead identifies this as an outcome. The method of comparison was develop…
Measuring the Pay Disparity between Typically Female Occupations and Other Jobs: A Bivariate Selectivity Approach
The author of this study, using a bivariate probit selectivity model with data from the 1984 Panel Survey of Income Dynamics, finds that women in female-dominated jobs earned 6–15 percent less than women with the same characteristics in other occupations. These results support the crowding hypothesis, according to which women are crowded into “female jobs” because of employer discrimination, resulting in lower wages for those jobs. Previous studi…

The Economics of Comparable Worth
Killingsworth provides a clear statement of the definitional and conceptual issues surrounding comparable worth as well as an examination of its actual and potential effects. He also shows how comparable worth might work in alternative labor market settings and provides evidence of the effects of the comparable worth measures implemented in San Jose, Calif., the State of Minnesota, and Australia

Deadbeats and turnips in child support reform
Child support reforms have focused almost exclusively on punitive measures, driven by the stereotypical image of a “deadbeat dad” who can afford to pay child support but refuses to do so. This image fits some noncustodial fathers, but ignores the diverse nature of this population. We show that lack of income is a significant barrier to child support payments for 16 to 33 percent of young noncustodial fathers, whom we call “turnips” after the comm…
