Trust in scientists and their role in society across 68 countries
Science is crucial for evidence-based decision-making. Public trust in scientists can help decision makers act on the basis of the best available evidence, especially during crises. However, in recent years the epistemic authority of science has been challenged, causing concerns about low public trust in scientists. We interrogated these concerns with a preregistered 68-country survey of 71,922 respondents and found that in most countries, most p…
Regional disparities and seasonal differences in climate risk to rice labour
The 880 million agricultural workers of the world are especially vulnerable to increasing heat stress due to climate change, affecting the health of individuals and reducing labour productivity. In this study, we focus on rice harvests across Asia and estimate the future impact on labour productivity by considering changes in climate at the time of the annual harvest. During these specific times of the year, heat stress is often high compared to …
Changes in European wind energy generation potential within a 1.5 °C warmer world
Global climate model simulations from the 'Half a degree Additional warming, Prognosis and Projected Impacts' (HAPPI) project were used to assess how wind power generation over Europe would change in a future world where global temperatures reach 1.5 C above pre-industrial levels. Comparing recent historical (2006Comparing recent historical ( -2015) ) and future 1.5 C forcing experiments highlights that the climate models demonstrate a northward …
