  • Can There be a Just Resolution of Conflict

    Dov Ronen•ARTICLE•Peace and Conflict Studies•1998•Cited by: 2•References: 6

I may have first thought about "just resolution of conflict" when I was a student at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem many years ago. Those days I often heard on the radio--there was no TV in Israel at the time--and read about King Hussein's repeated calls for a "just and lasting Peace" in the Middle East. I have also noticed over the years that the same slogan has been repeated, not only by King Hussein, but also by other prominent and less pr…

  • Self‐determination as a challenge to United States foreign policy

    Dov Ronen•ARTICLE•International Interactions•1981•References: 4

Two fundamental human aspirations have stood out over the past 200 years. One is the quest of peoples for self‐determination; the other is the quest for physical survival and comfort. United States foreign policy has traditionally supported the notion of self‐determination, but has often, in the Cold War context, practiced policies which vitiated a people's quest for self‐determination. Particularly when that quest was perceived as pro‐Communist,…

Although it has long been realised that 'developing' countries do not have to follow the example of 'developed' nations, the mere use of the terms 'nation-building' and 'national integration' implies a straight line of 'progress' from dispersed sub-national communities towards the integrated entity of the nation-state. Add the eagerness of political leaders in the Third World to exert effective control over the population in the absence of establ…

  • The Colonial Elite in Dahomey

    Dov Ronen•ARTICLE•African Studies Review•1974•Cited by: 3

The number, behavior, and attitudes of the Dahamean modern elite, of the 1930's have been outstanding among the French-speaking African elites and have earned for Dahomey fame as the Latin Quarter of West Africa. What does this complimentary title suggest? It suggests that Dahomey has a concentration of educated people as does the quarter in the environs of the Sorbonne and also, perhaps, that Dahomeans are generally intelligent and educated. It …
