The psychology of work and unemployment in Australia today
This paper reviews recent literature on psychological aspects of work, unemployment, and underemployment in Australia at the beginning of the 21st century. It examines different notions of “work”, including paid employment and unpaid work (e.g., emotional work, volunteer work). Punishment and behaviour change
In view of recent trends in Australia and overseas towards an increased reliance on punishment as a primary response to crime, this paper reviews the psychological research evidence on the efficacy of punishment, and considers alternatives to present trends. This paper represents part of an ongoing project on the social construction of emotion. Although our general findings are that emotions are complex and difficult to separate from one another, this paper focuses on anger - an emotion which presents problems for women. Beliefs about Memory in the Aged
Beliefs about memory in the aged were measured across two cultures (58 Sumatrans and 62 residents of Sydney, Australia) for both young (20-59 years) and old (60+) subjects. Sixteen items of common knowledge were selected and matched by back translation to measure (a) beliefs about capacity of old people to remember the items and (b) beliefs about the importance of remembering the items.
