  • Lotus and its afterlives: Memory, pedagogy and anticolonial solidarity

    Chandni Desai, Rafeef Ziadah•ARTICLE•Curriculum Inquiry•2022•Cited by: 4•References: 10

In this article we examine the Lotus: Afro-Asian Writings journal as an insurgent space that reflected Afro-Asian solidarity. We argue that Lotus constituted “infrastructures of dissent” and “infrastructures of solidarity” which were constructed between different anti-colonial movements. Though Lotus was widely circulated through different geographies, debated and discussed, there remains very little scholarly attention around its origins, impact…

This article tells the story of Palestinian visual archives in the post-Oslo period, specifically the archives of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) and their whereabouts following the PLO’s departure from Tunisia in the 1990s. It also narrates the story of the Palestinian Broadcasting Corporation (PBC) in the West Bank and Gaza and the challenges it encountered in preserving its visual archive. The article posits that the displacement…

  • Disrupting Settler-Colonial Capitalism: Indigenous Intifadas and Resurgent Solidarity from Turtle Island to Palestine

    Chandni Desai•ARTICLE•Journal of Palestine Studies•2021•Cited by: 9

This article explores the resurgence of Indigenous/Palestine solidarity during the Wet’suwet’en land sovereignty struggle in Canada that took place around the same time Donald Trump’s Middle East “peace plan” was released in early 2020. Historicizing this resurgence within a longer period of anti-colonial resistance, the article attends to the distinct historical, political-economic, and juridical formations that undergird settler colonialism in …

  • An 'Olympics without Apartheid: Brazilian-Palestinian solidarity against Israeli securitisation

    Open Access•Chandni Desai, Heather Sykes•ARTICLE•Race & Class•2019•References: 18

It was at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games that, for the first time, activists mobilised against the Israeli securitisation of sport. Brazilian-Palestinian solidarity action, calling for Rio to be an 'Olympics without Apartheid', led the then Brazilian government to distance itself from a $2 billion agreement with an Israeli security company. The authors discuss the way in which the solidarity movement emerged and how Israeli companies use Gaza as a 'l…

  • Shooting back in the occupied territories: An anti-colonial participatory politics

    Chandni Desai•ARTICLE•Curriculum Inquiry•2015•Cited by: 3•References: 1

In this article I argue that Palestinians, in particular Palestinian youth engage in forms of cultural resistance such as filming, video production and dissemination in their everyday lives as a way to re-configure place, space, law, knowledge and violence, through a critical race, feminist, anti-colonial theoretical analysis. Recently, interest in forms of youth political engagement has surfaced in scholarly discussions. The concept of “particip…

  • The Sense of Entitlement

    Open Access•Rubén Gaztambide-Fernández, Rubén Gaztambide‐Fernández et al.•CHAPTER•Privilege, Agency and Affect•2013

The first time Cameron visited the Toronto Creative and Performing Arts School (CAPA), he fell in love. It was the song ‘Jellicle Cats’ from his favourite musical that enamoured him to the idea of attending a specialised arts high school. Star-struck with the students’ performance, he began to see himself as one of them. ‘They were so amazing! I was in awe’. He thought, ‘to be in that group one day would be incredible’. At that moment, Cameron fe…
